Does LOs have nightmare?
« on: July 07, 2008, 17:11:18 pm »
 Hi,

DD is 4 mo. Today she woke up from her 1st nap crying really loud as she has had a nightmare. Is it possible? Has anybody experienced this with your LO?  I wouldn't mistake this cry for hunger or tiredness as she had "suffering expression" like she was surprised.

It's not the 1st time that this happen and today she couldn't resettle after waking up crying. She is on 4 hrs EASY, so she was supposed to have slept for 1.5 or 2 hours but woke up at 1 hr mark.

I have experienced this once at night as well.

Am I frightening my LO?  ???

I have no idea, so I googled it... found some interesting answers.  Apparently, by studying brain waves of infants and toddlers, scientists did find that babies do in fact dream and this peaks somewhere between 3 and 5 months.  There is no way of determining what the babies were dreaming about, but it's likely their brains were working through their real life experiences (ie feelings of hunger, discomfort due to surgery, teething pain).  I doubt that you have frightened your LO, though! It's possible she's teething and the pain from that is what's waking her as opposed to a nightmare... but really, how would we ever know.  As long as you're there to comfort her when she wakes, that's all you can do!  My DD2 just turned 3 and has occasional nightmares about monsters...  you'll be comforting your little girl for many years to come!

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for your reply. Your LOs are so sweet!

I wonder if 4 mo is too early for her to be teething, as I read somewhere that it's more common at 6 to 8 months, but it may be a possibility as she is drooling a lot!

 :)

My DD1 had 2 teeth at 5 mos, I had 6 teeth by 4 mos (!!), and my DD2 has none at 9 mos... so we're all different, your LO could be!

And thanks for the compliment!  :)
