Short naps and waking up crying - 10 weeks old
« on: July 10, 2008, 21:44:42 pm »
My 10 week old ds is king of inconsistent napping. I would say 75% of the time he is not napping long enough.  I say this because most naps last 30-45 minutes and he almost always wakes up crying.

When he does wake crying, I can never get him to resettle. Swaddling, pacifier, shh-pat, nothing.  He just lies there crying with his eyes closed (which to me means he's still exhausted).  What do I do?  It's an hour to the next feed usually, so I don't want to feed THAT early, but how can I just let him cry it out for an hour in bed?  Nothing works many times.  I have a sound machine playing white noise to help eliminate any traffic disruptions, etc.  I have played so often with his A time but I can never seem to get it right.  I am fine with short naps if that's how he is, but waking up crying is no good!  I will often pick him up for a bit just to calm him down, but then as soon as he is put back in his crib, it starts him crying!

I doubt there is any specific advice, but I am just exasperated by it all.  I hate to see him cry when I know exactly what he needs to alleviate it -- SLEEP!   :-[

hugs
i'd try really shortening up the A times and see if this helps, he sounds OT and in need of sleep.  you have tried resettling with shh pat and it doesn't work?

It is hard!!  But just as a reminder, your bubs are all still really young.  Babies sort out nighttime sleep first (0-3 mos) and day sleep later (3-6 mos), so it's pretty normal to be a bit wonky at this age.  I'm with Brenda, waking up crying generally means OT.  Also, keep in mind that if one nap is short, the next A time needs to be shorter than "normal" since your lo won't be as well rested.

Do you short nap mommies find it hard to get in things like tummy time and other activities because you lo is overtired for the remainder of the day and crabby in some cases?  I am trying not to worry too much about it but these short naps make it challenging to get in the things she needs later in the day!

there's tons of time for tummy time!  my LO wasn't OT and still HATED tummy time.  she'd just scream after a couple minutes.   in fact at 3.5 mo she learned to roll from tummy to back and that was the end of tummy time.  and her head shape is fine and she can crawl so it all works out.

same here - dd HATED tummy time.  And even from about 8 weeks could go from tummy to side, so tummy time was always a battle in our house.  She's fine now too :)  FWIW, I'm glad I spent the time sleep training instead of tummy time....the pay off lasts longer imo.
