greenish mucusish stool, falling asleep at breast
« on: July 28, 2008, 19:09:32 pm »
My baby is 12 weeks, he finally caught on to breastfeeding at 6 weeks, before that I was pumping and using shield. I am still on domperidone.

Lately I've noticed that he is falling asleep at the breast in the mornings and at night, during mid day he doesn't seem to be able to get enough and tugs... also I feel that my leet down is very delayed. His stool sometimes is greenish, today it was even a bit mucusy, he also spit up a couple times today.

Please help. Thank you!

Can you describe a rough day of feeding? How many feeds a day? At what point is he falling asleep and how long would it have been since he previously slept? Falling asleep during feeds at night is perfectly normal and actually probably quite useful!
How wet are his nappies?
How is his weight gain?
How often is poo green?

I dealt with the spitting up and green poo and it came from a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.  Is he gassy?  Loud poops and gas?  Baby acne?  Those are other signs.

I will have to keep a log for a day or two to know for sure, it's all a blur. But I think he is feeding 8 times a day, he follows the EASY routine, so he eats when he wakes up. Last night he barely ate, so I pumped a bit this morning to dream feed him, but he woke up when I had 3 oz and it was torture trying to get him to finish it.. he gets very aggitated sometimes at the breast and starts pulling on it and sqirming, so I burp him, but nothing comes out... at first I thought it was because he wasn't getting milk fast enough, but he is swallowing and freaking out at the same time... I think I will go see my doctor. He has lots of wet diapers and around 4 - 5 poops, but they aren't as big as they used to be and recently have been a little green.

Size and number of poop doesn't indicate anything. It's common for there to be variation and babies often start to slow down in their pooing frequency. As the PP says green can indicate a foremilk imbalance which might come from oversupply or if he is very sleepy he may not be 'finishing' the breast.
If he's on EASY but falling asleep feeding is he napping for long enough and waking up rested? Might he need some more time to get more alert before feeding?

I think seeing your doctor is a good idea if your instincts are telling you something might be up. It might be worth ruling out reflux too:
