sudden NW's???
« on: July 30, 2008, 13:10:00 pm »
my ds is 21 months now and the last 3 night he has woken up once per night and cried hard???  It is always at a different time too.  The first 2 nights i thought b/c he didn't nap as long ( only 1 hr instead of 1.5-2) but i put him to bed early though, yesterday he had a 2 hr nap....  He woke up the first night at 12:45am, the second night 11:15pm and last night 3:06am.  He goes back to sleep quick, i pick him up rub his back for 1 min or so until he's calm again and then he goes right back to sleep.  He then has slept in a bit in the am b/c of this.  He normally wakes at 6:30 but with this nw the 1st 2 days he slept till 7am and today it's 8:06 and still sleeping????? he never sleeps till 8am EVER???? it seems the later the nw the later he sleeps in?

what do you thinkis causing his nw's???

he has been all week putting his hand or fingers in his mouth, i rubbed his gums to see if his 2nd year molars are coming in but there was no bumps yet.  do you think it is still teeth???  any other ideas

I personally would say teeth. They can hurt before you can see or feel anything, as they are moving through the bone. Colin always does the hard crying thing at night with teeth. :(

thanks, i was thinking so but wasn't sure.  sometimes with his teeth they have given him big problems and then others nothing!  strange....  when we were in mexico in jan he was 14 months then and he got 3 molars without any knowledge untill he was laughing so hard i saw them!!!! so i was hoping these 2nd molars would be the same...... wishful thinking...

so do you still think it can be teeth or something esle, it has been 2 weeks now!  SOmetimes he wakes 3 times adn others only once... last night it was 5:30 and the night before was 5am.  The night before that though was 3 times at 1:17, 3:30 and 5:30?????  I find all i do is walk in and either he lays back down for me and then i re cover him and walk out or i quickly lay him down, cover him adn then walk out.  NO fuss, no cries, nothing????? He goes right back to sleep but me on the other hand, tosses and turns for 1 hr after till i get back to sleep and then sometimes he wakes right when i fall asleep....  I was thinking maybe seperation???? what do you think????

Can you post your daily routine? Maybe it needs a tweak.

So do you mean he's crying before you go in but he stops when you get there?

his normal routine was like this
wake 6:30-6:45
nap 12:30 mostly 1.5 hrs but can go up to 2.5hrs, not as normal though.
bed at 8pm if normal nap if napped longer 8:30, i always get him ready for bed 30 min prior to do books, etc so he is sleeping by the 8 or 8:30 mark. I never go past 6 hrs A time and try to do 5.5 ish most days

now since these night wakes if he wakes then he sleeps in anywhere from 7am - 8:30.  then nap gets pushed back a bit but never past 1:30 and i never let him sleep past 3:30pm no matter what!  then bed can be anywhere from 8-9pm, again i don't go past 6 hrs A time, more 5.5.

I did think it was teething in the beginning as he was putting his fingers or hand in his mouth constantly but it's been 2 weeks now.
when he does wake he starts to cry right away, stand up and starts jumping up and down in his crib holding the side.  he will keep crying and get more upset if i don't come in.  once i come in all i have to say is " go back to bed" and he will lay back down, i will then cover him up and walk out.  He is fine and goes right back to sleep.  The other times i would pick him up from the side and lay him down, cover him up and wlak out and he is also fine after.

Saturday he woke up at 7:45, napped 1 hr only bed at 7:45 and then woke up at 5:30 this am. put him for a nap ( at 12:30) but didn't fall asleep till 1pm ( i know he must of been ot) and slept 1.5 hrs( 1pm-2:30) and bed was at 8:10, sleeping ??? i just heard him talking and it's 8:50??? OT or not enough A time today????.   so what do you think....... normally nap and bed are no problem and he falls asleep quickly!

when on his normal schedule and waking 6:30ish he always napped at 12:30 daily and always napped 1.5 hr min.  i was pretty much doing 6 hrs a time at that time and it seemed to work great, i don't know what has changed....

My advice would be to stick to the same start time and bedtime each day. I found that helped us a lot when Colin had similar issues. He got the picture pretty quickly and things smoothed right out.

At his age, I would stick closer to 5.5 hours A time than 6 hours. And his naps should be 2 hours definitely. There are always off days of course and early bedtime can be your friend ;)

so even if he wakes 3 times at night, i should still wake him at 6:30???  Last night he kinda tosses and fussed a bit at 1am, but he wasn't crying or jumping.  I let it be and he fell back to sleep. He did then wake at 6am crying and jumping ( i find if he doesn't wake talking he is still very tired), i walked in layed him down and covered him up and he went back to sleep till 7:30.  he then woke up very happy and talking.  So if i would of kept him up at 6 then he would of been cranky and napped way too early and threw off his day and then bedtime.  SO that is why i just let him sleep in when he wakes and then adjust his pm nap a bit so he still goes to bed around a similar time frame.  Last night i put him to bed at 8 ( 5.5 A time) and he talked till 9pm!!!
