Nap refusal - my nerves are wearing thin
« on: August 05, 2008, 18:27:13 pm »
My 25 month old ds is refusing naps.  They used to be only 1 missed-nap day every week and a half or so, and recently we've even had back to back days!   :o

Its doing a number on my nerves and making for tantrums and early wakings, I could go on.

Is this just a phase?  I certainly hope so.  I just checked on him and he had pulled his diaper off too.  His outfit snaps at the crotch so I have no idea how he did it.

Our schedule before all of this went wrong was this:
7:00 up
1:30 - 3:30 nap
asleep by 8:30 at the latest

TIA
Cindy

Hey there - Grrr - it's so annoying isn't it! My DS did this too and do you know what worked? Moving his nap earlier!! So I now put him down around 5.5 hours after wake-up. So if he wakes at 7 then I put he'd be in bed at 12.30.

Have you tried an earlier nap?

I'll give it a shot.  So, maybe I'm missing the window?

Yes - I find if I offer it too late he just won't nap. I thought he was getting ready to give it up until someone on here suggested an earlier nap and it worked straight away. Of course your fella may indeed be ready to give it up.....!

Let me know if it works!

This happened to us too. I was always amazed that DS would sleep at 12.30 at Daycare when for me, it would have been 1pm at the earliest. I decided one day to try for 12.30 even though he didn't seem that tired. I was shocked that he went to sleep without a problem. 12.30 is the magic time for us! Good luck!

This gives me hope!  This morning he woke at 6:30 - I know the poor guy is so OT.  :-\

I'll try to get him down at noon...

So far, so good.  Its quiet through the monitor - although I don't know that he's sleeping because I hear some knocks every now and then.  The quiet is a big improvement from yesterday though - then it was bangs and booms and wild giggles - he was/is seriously OT!

We've had a crazy schedule lately - and lots of sitters and shuffling of his schedule.  It was unavoidable, but apparently it was too much for him.

Thanks a million!

We have had exactly the same problems recently and I am sure it is down to DD's daytime routine going out of the window, things are getting slowly better now that I am trying to reintroduce some consistancy back into her life, good luck  :)

Did you keep the "A" time at 5.5 hours?  DS is catching up on sleep and today when I laid him down for a nap at 5.5 hours, its not as successful.  He's just babbling and playing.

My DD is going for her nap at 5hrs now but yesterday she had an EW so I put her down at 11.30 which was 5½ hours, she was quite OT by then but fell asleep in minutes and slept nearly 1½ hours which is good for her. I am now getting naps but her mornings are creeping earlier and earlier and her afternoon A time tolerance is getting shorter which is making her OT before bed  ::) As your DS used to do 6.5 hrs A time maybe 6 hours is better when catching up on sleep? This is how I got into my mess, Leorah was OT but she still needed a certain amount of A time before she was ready to nap, it is making it really hard to catch her up on sleep  :P

Based on today's wake up time, I might have misjudged yesterday's wake up by 30 mins.  That could have been the problem.  He was rubbing his eyes right before nap, so we probably put him down too late.

Will try again today!  DH is around and can get ds to sleep for naps better than I can.   ::)

Tomorrow ds has a Dr appt and won't get a nap, so I feel lots of pressure to succeed today.

Thanks!
Cindy
