Can't work out what's causing wakings?
« on: August 08, 2008, 08:06:13 am »
DS is nearly 17mo and for the last few weeks we have been having random wakings anytime after 2am, its not every night and I can't seem to find anything causing then. I am getting pretty tired and grumpy and was hoping for some fresh eyes to hopefully shed some light. He is on 1 nap and has been consistently for 2 months now.

Wake - anytime between 6.30-7.30
Nap - 1/1.30-3/3.30
Bed - 7pm asleep by 7.30

He is good at self settling for all sleeps but when he has these wakings he just doesn't seem to be able to put himself back to sleep. He will wake and cry out then go quiet, wake go quiet on and on until it escalates and I go in to him. I don't even have to pick him up just tell him its sleep time and stroke his head then leave. He will go quiet for around 10-15mins then start again. This can go on for anything up to 2hrs then he will suddenly go back to sleep and sleep till morning. Any ideas?

It was like reading a post about DD. She will be 17 mo in 4 days, we have pretty much the same routine except for the nap, she is down at 12.00 and sleeps until 2.30 - 3.00. And we also had random NWs 2 weeks ago, generally around 2 am. I couldn't figure out the reason then. Now everything is just as it was before, so I guess the reason was teething. HTH

It could be due to his unbalanced A times. His am A time is very long for his age and the one before bed is quite short. I would Move nap to 12/12:30 and have him up by 3 pm at the latest. Then do bed at 7 pm.

Hi just wanted to say thanks for the replies, I have as suggested moved his nap earlier and he is now in bed by 12.30 and will sleep up to 2hrs mostly 1hr 40mins but thankfully he hasn't had nw since so hopefully this has done the trick. One thing I have noticed is that his last eye tooth has broken through so I wonder if some of the wakings were teething related? If so bad mummy for not realising and giving pain meds!!
