Challenge for you all: help me fogure out NWs
« on: August 09, 2008, 11:54:16 am »
DD is 13 months old has never slept well and most of you on here know what I mean ;) About 3 weeks ago she started only waking once or twice this lasted for maybe a week, in the meantime I went to NY (had a blast) and she was great for my mum (0ne or two NWs) then the last night mum had her she woke ALOT just like she used  to prior to the good sleep. Then I got back and she's slept like that ever since. It's getting OTT, I'm exhausted and have no idea why shes waking. Here's the background:
She goes to sleep fine no probs, starts screaming out LOUD anywhere from 1 hr later to 3 hrs later, there is no pattern only that the initial sleep is generally better than later on in the night. Often she'll just scream out and go back to sleep but many time I have to go to her where I either a) replug her (she's never had bad NWs from paci addiction and can replug herself but seems soo tired she doesnt even try AND she's slept almost TTN fine without being replug so i'm pretty confident it's not that) b) shhh her a little or c) pick her up and give her some camomille (she drinks this before bed...doesnt drink milk). Usually I hold her till shes fully out cold then put her back down as I cannot be doing any pu/pd at this time and I need the little sleep I get.
This goes on all night, last night was particularly bad as she never actually went into a deep sleep and I was pu all night >:(
Shes always woken up a lot but its the screeching thing that's new and is totally throwing me, she also wriggles and writhes like crazy and it would appear she does have tummy ache (occasional wind too) BUT come 7 or 8 am she totally fine and continues to be so during the day.
She's cutting teeth atm and I have given pain meds and gel and no difference.
We swtiched to one nap about 3 weeks ago, but she's still transitioning in that shes clearly VERY tired come nap and bedtime but her behaviour isnt OT IYKWIM...

SO, BW brains, get your thinking caps on....
WTF??? ??? ??? ??? ???

My guess would be accumulated OT from the 2-1 switch.  I think sometimes they seem like they're doing okay with it and then the OT accumulates.

If it were me, I would try offering a short nap in the morning (20-30 minutes) perhaps in a stroller or car.  We did this for a while around this age and it helped keep the OT at bay.

I don't feel confident about this suggestion--I just think that's what I'd think if it was my LO.

Hoping some one else comes along with additional or better insight to help you out. :D

My first thought was OT also.  I know she's a fair bit older than Hayden, but we recently went to a wedding and she didn't sleep in the car as I thought she would... Anyways, Hayden was ridiculously OT (but not acting like it, she did very well - likely because of all of the distraction) and that night she never got into a deep sleep.  The first 4 hours she was up every 45 minutes and then up every 2 hours after that.  I agree with Bethany, try a teeny catnap in the am for a few days and see if that helps.

HTH, sorry it's not the magic wand!  :)
