convertible crib question
« on: August 10, 2008, 16:42:26 pm »
i just realized that our crib is only convertible to a double bed... i thought it converted to a daybed first!  so now my plan is kaboshed!!!!  what would you suggest i do..... ( he is 21.5 monthsnow but doesn't attempt climbing or anything yet)  should i just convert it to the double bed and then get a rail for the one side and place the other side against the wall or get him a smaller bed ( toddler or twin) until he is good at sleeping in a bed??? than move him up in  af ew years when he out grows that and then set up his crib into the double bed..... what do you think......

it's worth trying it (like you say, with the rail) so you don't have to cough up extra $ for a new bed.  i certainly would.

but, i would leave him in the crib for as long as you can.

i think the double bed would be better as if he rolls over, he won't roll off. We have a cot that converts to a toddler bed, and I don't htink it's going to work real well now....I mean I think the width of a normal bed would mean that she has more room and hence not roll out.

Lilly is no way at crawling out either, but I am thinking of it as she is getting bigger.

Susan why do we need to keep them in as long as possible? just so they don't get out as much?

exactly!  if they are happy in there, and nothing else warrants a change sooner, i'd leave them be.  it's a lot less worry.

once they start to want to climb over the edge, you worry about them falling out, so you put them in a 'big bed.'  then you worry about them falling out of that, so you put up rails.  but, there's a gap, and they can get out whenever they want, so you worry about what they will walk into during the night.

then when you think they can handle it, you remove the rails, and worry about them falling out again, and they do...

Can you not just remove the sliding gate off the one side? The crib I have is not a convertible one but I just converted it anyway for ds and it's been fine.

Also, I moved my dd into a double bed when she got sick of the crib and she never fell out. To stop her rolling out, I got two retired towels, rolled each up lengthwise to make two long bolsters and placed them between the mattress protector and the fitted sheet down each side of the bed and it worked really, really well.

i thought of converting our crib into a toddler bed but i didn't know how secure it would be with out the front rail on it.  As if it was ment to do that fron the factory i think it would have a brace or something to put up in the front after you remove the rail, right.....

my son jumpsup and down in his bed when he wakes up crying for me and i think he will break his crib soon, if he keeps it up.....LOL  that is why i was thinking on changing him over but then like me and bean said i KNOW he will climb out and open his door and come to us!  so i am damed if i do or don't.... at least if he breaks the bottom of his crib from jumping on it, i then will have NO choice but convert him his big boy bed!!!
