OT or UT??
« on: August 18, 2008, 20:44:58 pm »
From awake in the morning to nap #1 and then from nap #1 to nap #2, my girls (twins) have no problems.  They go right to sleep with little to no whining.  Nap #3 (afternoon/early evening) is our downfall!!  I can not seem to get it right.  They fight it like nothing I've ever seen.  Today they napped from 9 until 10 and then 12 until 1:45.  I put them down at 3:45 and they first whined/babbled then full on cry.  I let the crying go on for just a few minutes as it was getting hysterical.  I did the pat/shush thing for what seemed like an eternity.  While I was with Hannah, Grace put herself to sleep.  BUT this was all 45 minutes later!!  At 4:30.  What am I doing wrong?!!  So now they fell asleep at 4:30 and our bedtime is 7.  I assume I should not let them sleep past 5:14?? Should bedtime be made later tonight?

hi
i think they are slightly UT for their naps.

a 1 hour nap first thing suggests UT and you could stretch the first A time a bit.  then after a 1 hour nap 2 hours A time seems right for them (but if you are successful at gettign nap 1 longer they will likely need longer than 2 hours here), then after such a great nap they should need about 2 hours 15 min to 2.5 hours A time before nap #3.  nap 3 should only be a catnap, so 4:30-5:15 is sufficient and after a short nap like this A time should be about 1.5 hours which puts bedtime at 6:45-7 which is fine.

typical A time for 5 mo is just over 2 hours - 2 hours 15 min to 2.5 hours.

Sorry, one more question.  Yesterday was a little weird, that was not typical at all (except for the fact that they are not very receptive to a catnap in the late afternoon).  Usually it looks like this: nap #1 is 9:00 until 11:00.  And nap #2 is 1:00 until 2:00.  Should they have longer than 2 hours awake time there?  Is that why nap #2 is usually short?  And if they only sleep an hour for nap #2, how long should I wait for nap #3?

a nap that lasts longer than 45 min usually means UT, so i'd stretch the second a time by 5 or 10 min and see if this imporves things.  often the first A time is shorter than the rest.

after a 1 hour nap do slightly shorter A time - like 1 hour 45 min
