Anyone linked poor sleep with foods /adeniods?
« on: August 19, 2008, 06:34:01 am »
Ds2 who was 3yo in May has been a really erratic sleeper since he got sick at 4mo, but I've never really been able to pin point why it got really bad, just put it down to all the usual things (teething, TT -totally TT for 8months day & night now, illness, dropping naps etc)

We get good spells & then we get horrid ones like the last few weeks (I'm talking hourly wake ups). For a while I thought the issue was related to him giving up naps etc & often falling asleep on my lap during story time etc, but we broke that habit (also got naps back) but the sleep is still so poor on such a regular basis - now thinking there is something more "medical" (he sleeps with his mouth open & sometimes snores so ? adeniods or food.

It got the the point that he was sleeping on the floor in our room so I could get sleep & then it improved & after 2 trips away (him sleeping in the same room as me) I managed to get him back in his bed, but in the last week we have had 3 nights where he has been up almost hourly... mostly he stays in his bed & keeps calling out, but sometimes he just comes into my room.
We had some improvement when I found Fanta (orange Fizzy) was consumed on 2 occasions that we had really poor sleep & then I linked it to yellow & red colours... we've since made sure they aren't consumed & had a pretty good run for a while,  but now the only thing I seem to be able to link in diet is if he has more than 2 slices of bread & vegemite/day... so I'm thinking yeast? but even then we still get waking 1-2 night, although that has been when the covers are off & it is cold - about 10C inside the house at night... no central heating here. I'm going to put a heater in his room & stop the vegemite/bread for a few days.
So I'm just wondering if anyone else has linked food to sleep... I'm running out of ideas & truelly feel my health is suffering... I've gained 10kg in 6months related to stress/energy top up eating (also due to my Step-d, which is another story)
BTW apart from sleep & the odd 3yo determination we are talking about a really easygoing (all be it thinking he is a 5yo) child in other aspects of life.

Kate, I'm so sorry it's gotten to the point where your health is suffering. I know how stressful it can be...hopefully you'll be able to get to the bottom of it.

We had some sleep issues with Tyler not too long ago. He was a really restless sleeper and he snored, slept with his mouth open, and had really bad breath. He was always tired in the morning and his was very emotional during the day, which told me that he wasn't getting enough sleep. I started to suspect enlarged tonsils/adenoids or apnea. We talked to his dr about it and started to look into it. Xrays showed that his adenoids were slightly larger than normal but probably not large enough to cause apnea. The dr noticed that his nasal passages were inflamed every time she saw him, so we tried a prescription nasal spray. It made a huge difference. He doesn't snore anymore, he sleeps very soundly, and he's clearly much more well rested. We still aren't totally sure why his nasal passages are so swollen.

It's worth a mention to the dr. Even if it isn't tonsils/adenoids, there are still other issues that can disrupt sleep that have relatively easy solutions. I hope you find some answers!

Jessica, followed that thread & that was one of the things that started me looking at his diet - one of his cousins has additive issues, but then the whole family except BIL (dh's brother) has special diets (including extended) so pretty sure that comes down SIL's side, trouble is he is really 90% of the time the easiest child around (the other 10% is like his father & food doesn't seem to impact his behaviour, yet I can't quite pin point anything KWIM.

Melissa for some reason he gets upset at the thougth of the Dr -used to love it & no stressful visits either (he didn't even get upset with immunisations LOL) so haven't yet got there

going to keep on with the food diary.

Please keep us updated Kate with the food diary stuff, would be really interested to hear how it goes!   :-*  Hope you get some more sleep soon, I know how hard it is to be the mum you want to be when you are tired and stressed yourself, it just suxs!  Hope it all works out or you can somehow get to the doctor for a consult.

I wasn't going to post because I felt it might jinx me, but as he was really upset when I went to work today (left with dh, but it was much earlier than normal, so no Mummy fill time) I'm thinking I'm jinxed already BUT the last 3 nights since a heater + vapouriser we've had really good sleep from him... Ok the other day he was up at 5.30, but that was when the Garbage trucks come by & that woke him, but apart from that & he has had vegemite sandwiches, hot dogs (red colours in the skin) + coloured sprinkles on a hot chocolate & still done better than the last months. Next 2 nights will tell as I'm working tomorrow too & I normally only do 1/week.
