BBB transition phase 2
« on: August 31, 2008, 19:27:05 pm »
Hi all,

I will keep this as short as I can.
Some of you may remember DS had to transition rapidly at 23 mths as he BROKE his cot by jumping in it. this was mid March. By mid May when extreme tiredness and nausea had set in with this pg I had had enough esp as DH wasn't really on board for the most part. the problem was only nighttime. Day time nap was fine and he still is doing really well with that, in pants now and dry every time!

Nighttime after 2 mths of transitioning still looked more or less the same....he would be put to bed after a wind-down at 7 and it would take anything from 1.5 to 2.5 hrs for him ti fall asleep....he would just keep getting out, in his sleeping bag lol waddling like a penguin and coming to the door or turning on the main light. We took out the light bulb (still haven't replaced it) and put a gate on the door and he fell asleep at least 5 times on the floor by the gate rubbing his hand along the bars (as he had in his cot). He never actually cried (he doesn't cry, just screams without tears) and was just too curious to go to sleep in the evenings....and then we had EW for the first time in 2 yrs also..and I mean 5am, so his usual nighttime sleep of 11hrs was reduced to 8...nightmare...

anway, last week in May I persuaded DH that we "rob" the Ikea cot from ILs and see does it make a difference to his sleeping....it did and we are back on track since first night in the tiny cot (he is the full length of it).....

here come the questions at last: as I am now 5 mths pg and going back to work tomorrow and completely lacking in energy....

should I:

1. transition O again at the nearest opportunity?
2. wait till he says he wants it?
3. set up some kind of reward system for staying in bed till alarm goes off at 7am etc....(sticker chart worked wonders for toilet training this past month)
4. wait till he is dry at nights and use this as my guideline for when to transition him?

I don't need the Ikea cot for new LO at all...we will have the original cot which matches the nursery furniture mended anyway and I will use Moses basker for first few months as I did with O. It s just we live in a small flat, O has a pokey bedroom and with a cot and toddler bed in it along with other furniture, toy storage area etc....he doesn't have much space to call his own.....

ok, sorry for the longwinded post....

huge hugs }}}}}}}}}}}}}{{{{{{{{{{{

thanks Stacy....I knew you'd be the first to answer!!! long posts don't scare you LOL!

Language wise Oscar has made such huge strides over the summer and we've seen such improvement in behaviour, toilet training success very quickly etc and I think this is a result of these strides...I just don't want to push him too much but would love to him to have the extra space he desperately needs.... and in a way to have it "over and done with" before I get huge!

thanks again

I know I haven't any experience of this yet but if I was in the same situation and L started sleeping great again after going back in the cot I'd keep her there until she asked to have a BB or really was too big for it and that was effecting her sleep. I would have thought the bedtime behaviour and stroking the bars of the gate were an indication that he isn't ready for the BB and feels secure in a cot still. Just for your own sanity and need for rest I wouldn't change it now it's going well. Leorah is taking a big interest in BBs now but I am keeping her in her cot which she loves until she is begging me for a BB and she doesn't have the language skills for that yet! I bet Oscar being spirited will let you know when he is ready and it probably wont be too long before he does  ;)

Good luck with whatever you do  :)

Just another thought, can you get some bars for the BB?

thanks Katt...the BBB has a soft material type guard on the side. Oscar just refused to get into cot an hour ago and I was alone so I let him go own for the night in the BBB....of course he woke up or kind of came-to after 45 mins or so (has a rotten cold) and has gone down beautifully now for DH in the cot....

will wait it out....should get another few months out of cot before next growth spurt anyway....

hugs,}{

Hi Shiv!
My gut tells me to hold off for now becuase he is newly potty trained, that's already a change..........unless he starts asking for BBB, then I would follow his lead.
RIght after we transitioned sam to BBB, he started asking for the potty and I was freaking out, beucase I thought it was too much change at once with new baby on the way, etc......but I didn't want to ignore it as he had initiated it. (we have not potty trained-he seemed to have lost interest as quickly as he found it---well, he goes occasionally, but that's a whole different post  ;))

thanks Amy....will put it off till he's refusing point-blank to sleep in the cot I think! And yes, big big changes coming up...not just the baby but pre-school 3 mornings from next week etc....
and he seems to like the fact that he sleeps in one place for daytime and the other for nighttime...even his concept of daytime/nighttime is based on these resting places as well as the sun/the dark etc!!!!

Hey Shiv!
I remember the day O broke his cot very well as we were chatting in the chat room while BW boards were down :) Can't believe it's been that long :o
I don't really have any advice on this either as we've not transitioned yet but it seems to me that it's not worth all the hazzle of how it was if he can stay in the cot for a while longer. When he keeps asking to go in the BB maybe a sticker chart for staying in there could work if it worked with PT? My first thought was a BBB with bars along the side as a guard, but if you already have one then that's out of the q. It's probably also important to decide with DH so that when you go for it again he's fully on board.

Hope your first day back at work went ok and that it was ok telling everyone about the pg. Hugs!!!

ps, the bed we have is a blue Ikea one (like half the boys in Poland ha ha), and Oscar really wanted it....doesn't have a bar attachment unlike some of their other toddler beds which have...
