Stopped food .. is it a problem yet?
« on: September 01, 2008, 12:21:14 pm »
Hiya!  :)
Myy DD has been refusing food now for about 3.5wks. She was never a big eater anyway, but we have gone from a 1oz solid meal 3 times a day to nothing! I keep offering, but she keeps her jaws tightly clenched and turns her head and cries if I persevere! I don't want to make it an issue for her, but shouldn't she be getting something? She drinks her milk like there has been no problem at all.
She has just had her first 2 teeth in the last week and a half and a slight tummy upset a few weeks ago which she vomited befoire bed and was fine the next day.
I started with pureed and mashed foods, no problems with the lumps, then she just stopped, even her favourites are not tempting her. She loved mashed bananas and pears and apples. She's never put any finger foods near her mouth, in fact she doesn't even put toys in her mouth (luckily she had minimal pain with the teething and didn't need a teething ring). She will eat the occasional bit of fruit if I hold it to her mouth, but after a quick suck, she doesn't want it, I even bought her baby biscuits (which I said I wouldn't as I don't know what cr@p they add to them) but she will drool on it for a while and then not want it (me holding it again!).
Today I placed on her tray some cucumber chunks and a cheese triangle and pear chunks, she ate about 3 chunks of pear and licked the cucmber and not the cheese, wanted to get down. She fiddled with all the food but with no intention of putting it anywhere near her mouth!  ::) ::)
She always has water with her food and I 've tried changing the time I offer her food during he A time.
Any advice please as I get sad reading how much other Mum's babies are eating and enjoying.  :'(

I wouldn't worry.  She is still young.  Just keep offering.  Baby milk (formula and bm) is still more important than solids at this age.  DS went through periods where he stopped eating (and he loves to eat) but I kept offering and he went back to eating again.  It is very normal.  Maybe try more finger food, or items off your plate.  When ds went off purees (7/8 mos) I started to feed him regular food.  Turns out he doesn't like any "baby" food.

HTH

BTW, dd never really enjoy eating solids until she was closer to 12 mos.  And she eats a variety of meats and veggies.

Thanks Mimi, she is back on mushed apple once a day, but nothing else, so I guess it's a start. I'm not worried about her weightwise, but I would like her to enjoy playing with the food and getting in a mess (I'm probably the only mum in my circle of friends who can't wait to see the food in her hair, in her neck creases, everywhere!!!) In her own time, I suppose.

;D  In that case, you should try BLW.  It's where you let her feed herself using her fingers or even a spoon.  Finger foods or thickened purees are great for them to learn to feed themselves, if you don't mind the mess.

It's on her tray every mealtime, and I eat from her tray too with her, but no luck, she occasionally mushes it up in her hands, but that's it. I suppose one day she'll figure out where her mouth is!!! Not tried the spoon tho - she has a mighty throw and DH will freak if he has to repaint the wall!!! Will give it a go ... ;)
