Screaming during 2nd nap ???
« on: September 03, 2008, 14:18:27 pm »
My lo Katrina, has set nap times and bedtime.  Wake up should be 7am, but from time to time she has EW's.  However her nap times are the same regardless of wake up time.  Nap1 10.00-10.45, Nap2 2-4, bedtime is 7.30.  She has had the same 2nd a time for about 2 months now, but lately she started screaming during the 2nd nap, after 30 mins, and again after another 30mins.  I would think totally OT except that she's had this a time for too long now for it to be the culprit.

Any opinions?

hugs.
i don't know...EWs do mean OT too though so maybe she is OT and you could move the second nap forward a bit?  and then bedtime may need to move up too.  when you drop the morning one you should be aiming for 1-3 anyway.  "set" nap times never worked for my LO, i have an idea of when i want to put her down but i really watch A times and around the time i think she may go down  i watch for cues and put her down when she looks tired.

I think I will try to move 2nd nap slightly forwards.  K's tired cues are very unreliable so set nap times work wonders for us.  Usually she rubs her eyes about an hour after waking up (which would obviously be too soon) and then nothing else.  She would be awake forever if it was up to her  ::)

Today she screamed at every 30 mins until I woke her up at 4pm (from 2pm).  And when I woke her up she wasn't very impressed, so maybe she does need to catch up on some sleep  ???

Could be teething but I'm not sure. She has 3 on the bottom now, and none on top.  So I think the top ones are due next. I heard they hurt like crazy.  The thing is she always has different symptoms.  1st tooth I didn't realise until it cut through, 2nd tooth, she was in pain, and 3rd tooth she was terribly congested for a week.   ???

On the otherhand, she's fine during her a times, AND during her am nap too.  I find it hard to believe that the teething monster hits right during the pm nap!! So I think teething can be ruled out.

I am going to put her down at 1.45 instead of 2 this afternoon and see what happens.  I'm afraid we'll end up with a short nap, and an OT baby by bedtime.

So I put her down 15 mins earlier for her 2nd nap, at 13.45 instead of 2.  The good news is she slept within 5 mins and right through the 30 min marks.  The confusing thing is she woke up crying at 3.40.  So she slept almost 2 hrs and yet still she woke up upset.  I let her try to resettle but no go.

So what do you suggest now?  Should I do the same tomorrow?

Sounds like you're on the right track! :)

Colin always screams like that when he's teething.

we have been having that as well, waking up around 35-40 min into the second nap screaming. for us its not a huge deal since our long nap is in the AM and usually its almost 5 by this time anyway. we just put to bed about 20 min earlier when this happens..

BUT..when my DS started waking up at 30 min a couple months ago, he would chat or scream..but it wasnt a pain scream..anyway..i tried a few things..but increasing A time is what worked for us..

how old is your lo?

She's almost 10 months old.  And yours?

Thank you Colin Mac's mom. I will try it again tomorrow and see what happens.

i would try it again.  a 2 hour nap is way better than waking every 30 min.
