Ack! What am I doing??!!
« on: September 03, 2008, 16:52:32 pm »
I don't even know where this goes, so please move it if this isn't the right spot.  Hayden is almost 11 months and BF.  She has been doing quite well with solids, but is still BF 4x a day plus one night feed.  Anyways, she has taken to trying to pull my shirt off and burying her face in my chest when she's hungry.  It's actually really cute, but I see that she's hungry outside of her normal feeding times.  It happens about once a day, and I feed her... but it's also normally before nap times.  When she wakes from her nap, she takes a full feed, and she usually doesn't fall asleep at the breast (she's been a good independent sleeper ever since her reflux was treated).  Today, however, she fell asleep on me (and it was at 3hrs 10 mins A time, she's been doing a little over 3.5 lately).  I sat her up, burped her, made a bunch of noise, but she was in a deep sleep, so I zipped her into her grobag and put her down.  All without waking her, and she's normally a light, light sleeper.  So I have a few questions about this:
1.  Is this OK to do?  It's kind of demand feeding, and throws the routine out the window a bit.
2.  Is it possible I'm misreading her cues and that's a new tired cue?  It normally happens when she 'should' be hungry, like today for instance, she wasn't keen on her cereal so she didn't have much breakfast, but it's also about 20 minutes before nap time.
3.  She's going through SA right now, and has been more difficult to get to sleep.  Is she trying to establish me as a prop?  I mean, does she know she feels sleepy but wants to be close to me?
4.  Is this some sort of growth spurt, since the additional daytime calories still don't help her get rid of the night feed, and she's still eating everything else as per normal?
5.  Am I over-thinking this?  ::)

TIA! :-*

It might be a sleep cue, but unlikely if you've never feed to sleep.

I would feed her.  If it's near nap time, don't do it in the nursery.  The moment you see her eye lids droop, end the feed , change her diaper, etc and wind down for nap.  As long as you have at least that much separation between feed and nap, I don't think it will become a prop.

Oh, and who knows why she's doing it, but an extra breastfeed here and there in response to her cues won't hurt anything IMO.  :-*

I agree, I wouldn't worry about it and I'd feed her if it's been a reasonable amount of time. Full disclosure, my son feeds to sleep.

Thanks ladies.  :-* Today she didn't do it at all, so I guess as always, I'll just follow her lead and she'll let me know. :)
