Getting up too early and therefore tired toddler
« on: September 11, 2008, 11:12:16 am »
DS goes to bed at 7:30 - 8pm which he has done for a long time. He is now 2yrs 3 months old. Until recently he typically sleeps until 7:30-8:30 am and has a nap during the day (enforced at daycare lol)
He still has the nap during the day but now wakes up when he hears me feed DD from 5-6am. He won't go back to sleep. In the past he sometimes needed us to settle him again and would chat happily to himself and drop off. Now he doesn't seem able to go back to sleep - he seems to be fighting it and shouts 'no' if we come back in and say night-night. even when i've gone back to bed he still wants to get up.
Daycare and we have noticed how tired he is during the day and he is grotty. He clearly needs to sleep until the usual time or even 7am whatever but not 5am. We can't change the layout of our house - all the rooms are very close - so he will get woken up. We only go in if he is really shouting. What else can we do?
He is so tired and so are we.

Maybe you're already doing this, but do you use anything for white noise in his room? The rooms in our house are really close together also and running a fan in DD's room has helped so DH doesn't wake her up when he's getting ready for work in the morning. Could be too that he doesn't need quite as much sleep as he did previously (how long is his nap at daycare?). Our DD started skipping naps right around when she turned 2 and her total sleep was 12 hrs. in a 24 hour period, whether she napped or not. Just a thought. HTH  :)

Oh yes, we have a white noise machine..and it has worked wonders because we have a dog.
They are not expensive in the US.
It really helps because all our rooms are close together.  Hope this helps!

we have a similar issue with our 3 year old waking up too early bc of our infant. i started putting him to bed at least an hour earlier than usual and as others said, i run the fan for blocking out noise. hopefully its just temporary. you may also want to give him something to help boost his immune system during this tired time, such as probiotic yogurt, vitamin c, etc.
