Bottle feeding pumped breast milk
« on: September 12, 2008, 14:57:09 pm »
My son is 6 weeks old and we've been breastfeeding exclusively.  The BF process has been quite a challenge, as both of my nipples are pretty severely broken down from bad latching in the beginning.  We've since fixed the latching issue, but the nipples are slow to heal.  Ouch!  My milk supply is abundant, so I'm also pumping daily.  When I feed my son pumped breast milk, is there a standard quantity I should feed him?  I know "they" say 1 month-old infants likely eat 1.5 - 2 ounces with each BF session.  However, that doesn't seem like enough breast milk for a bottle feeding session.  I think I'm going to start alternating breast/bottle feeding (bottle feeding pumped breast milk, of course) just to allow my wounds to heal a bit.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

My daughter also took almost 3 -3.5 oz when she was 1 mo. There is general "rule": baby's weight (in kg)/2 = amount of milk per feed (in oz) (it's not in any textbook, it's quick and dirty way to calculate the approximate amount they need).
Good luck!

To be honest I always just offered a full bottle and let LO decide when it was enough.  I had a very loose grip on the bottle, so LO could easily push the nipple out of the mouth when they were full. DD is currently 2 months and she will take 4 oz. at dreamfeed.  She doesn't get a bottle otherwise and this is only 3 hours after her bedtime breastfeed, so I consider it a regular feed time if that is any help.

I think at six weeks we were giving 3-4 oz / feeding.  But watch out for that growth spurt coming up! It came at 8 weeks for us & she was eating like 10 oz at times!!
