can tomato cause diaper rash?

Hi-
I've been fighting a serious diaper rash with my 13 mo DS-
Is it possible that it is allergy or diet related? It seemed to start as we were starting to eat lots of summer tomato...
no history of food allergies, except for me: mango- only the skin, not the fruit part. someone mentioned it's related to poison ivy
anyway...anyone else have this problem? I eliminated tomato and it does seem to be improving...

Tomatoes are highly acidic I believe and hence could easily cuase a diaper rash. However I don't think its something DS would be stuck with for the rest of his life, a she grows he will become more tolerant to tomatoes if that is indeed the case.

I agree, it is possible.  I would drop it from his diet for a week or so and see if it clears up.

my sister has had a sensitivity to tomatoes all her life and still can't eat them raw. she can get a seriously upset stomach even from pizza and pasta sauce too.

Totally agree with PP's.  It is very acidic and that could cause the diaper rash alone. 

My oldest son cannot have anything with tomato based sauce, causes his reflux to get bad. 

I agree, don't give him anything with tomato's and see if it clears up, then maybe give it to him once a week or so.

We've been tomato free for 3 days and I do see a good difference in the diaper rash-
so, is it just a reaction, or is it truly and allergy then?? opinions?
Poor kid LOVES tomatoes and homemade pizza-
if you are eating a tomato near him, he will cling to you and nibble at you till you give him some.

does not necessarily have to be an allergy, because if it were it would happen everytime he ate a tomato. I think its more like a reaction and could have been because he ate tomatoes sin access at a certain time and then consecutive eating has keep the reaction going. IYKWIM.

I would stay clear for a few weeks and then slowly introde back and see,

DS loves blueberries sand gnats to eta a whole box - is too old for me to try and hide it from him, but gets a rash when he eats too many, so we are avoiding them for this season..

If it's just a nappy/diaper rash, rather than an allergy, it shouldn't be a long-term problem. At that age, ds used to get really bad rashes after eating pineapple (another acidic thing), but he can eat them fine now. Like pps have said, give them a rest until the rash is completely gone, then very slowly bring them back in, and just limit how many he has at a time.

My DD1 used to always get a diaper rash when she ate more than a few cherry tomatoes, citrus or just a lot of fruit. She had very sensitive skin. I just monitored how much she ate.
