Nearly 6 MO started NW's
« on: September 25, 2008, 23:40:59 pm »
Hello!!
My DD is 6 months old in 5 days.  We recently went on holiday, where she actually started SSTN, however since we have been home she has been waking 2-4 times a night.  I had just started her on solids (just cereal at breakfast) but thought this might have been upsetting her tummy, as she seemed to be passing a lot of wind during the night when she woke.  I haven't given her solids for the last 2 days, however it hasn't made a difference to her NW.  Now I'm wondering if she's actually hungry, and maybe going through a growth spurt...???  She is very tired when she wakes, and it doesn't usually take too long to get her back to sleep again without feeding her, but then she will wake a couple of hours later - sometimes even just an hour later.  I'm confused about what to do, and worried that I will start reinforcing bad habits!!  Any advice would be appreciated!!

How old is your child?   6 months old on Tuesday

What’s his/her daily routine?
Times can vary, but routine yesterday was:
7am        BF
9.30am    Nap  1 1/2 hours
11am       BF
1.30pm    Nap  1 1/2 hours
3.00pm    BF
6.15pm    Catnap  40 mins
7.30pm    Bath, BF
8.30pm    Bed

What’s nap routine?  3 per day

How long are naps?  Sometimes only 45 mins, sometimes 11/2 hours.  Usually at least one long ( 1 1/2 hour) nap

What's bedtime routine? Time?    Bed not usually until 8.30pm.  She was co-sleeping with us until 3 months, and pretty much going to bed when we did, and I think her body clock is now set at this time.  I have tried putting her down earlier, but she will always wake after 45 mins.
Bedtime routine is just bath, BF, then into bed, usually awake.

Do you bottle or breastfed??  BF

How much? or how long?   Usually 4 times per day

If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed)  Both sides

How many wakes per night?  Between 2 - 4

What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up?    Still seems very tired, may pass wind.  Usually up for 10 - 15 mins.
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry?  I think a mantra cry/ fussing, but will escalate if I leave her.

What have you tried to settle??  I usually pick her up and hold her until she calms down, then put her back into the cot.

What do you do for A time and how long is it?  A tie is between 2 - 3 hours.  Anything from playing on floor, in jolly jumper, going for a walk.

Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones?  Don't think so.  Possibly starting SA...????  She is starting to cry sometimes when I go out of sight.  Only if she is left on her own though.

Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months)  Tried for one week!

Do they have a prop? If so what is it?  No

]Do they have a lovie[/color]  No

When is she waking during the night?  What times and for how long?  Do you feed her at any NW's?

Anything different about the holidays that you can think of?  Room darker/warmer/cooler/quieter etc ... just wondering if anything environmental could be affecting her sleep.

There is a big growth spurt at 6 months, so it could be that.  Have a look here for some advice ...

Thanks for your reply!!
The last few nights have been better - she is just waking up once now, or will go through until 5.00am.
I try not to feed her when she wakes, but on the odd occasion when I just can't get her to settle, I will give her a BF.
I'm thinking this must be a growth spurt, and maybe a sign that she is ready for solids.
I have started solids again today, so will see what happens!!
