3.5 month old NW's - not sure what to do now ...
« on: October 08, 2008, 13:42:16 pm »
Good morning!

I posted on the props board (with less detail!) but then thought maybe I should post here as well as my dilemma has slightly changed.  I have successfully weaned my ds off the pacifier with very little crying because he was waking up every hour looking for his pacifier.  The first couple of nights, I would hold him and put him in his crib and he would fuss and have a moderate cry but fall asleep soon after with the shush/pat.  Wonderful!

NOW ... in the middle of the night, he falls asleep at the breast.  Then, I put him in his crib.  He seems like he lightly wakes up ... he moves around a bit ... and goes to sleep.  Great ... or is it?

The first time this happened, he woke up about 3 times.
8 p.m. - sleep
10:30 p.m. - awake & nurse
2 a.m. - awake & nurse
5 a.m. - awake & nurse
8:15 a.m. - awake for the day

This is better than the more frequent wakings I had before!

The second night, he woke up 2 times and I thought we were on a nice trend!
8 p.m. - sleep
12:30 a.m. - awake & nurse
4 a.m. - awake & nurse
8 a.m. - awake for the day

Then, last night it went like this ...
8 p.m. - sleep
10:45 p.m. - awake & nurse
1:30 a.m. - awake & nurse
4 a.m. - awake & nurse
5:50 a.m. - awake & nurse
7:15 a.m. - awake for the day

What do I do if this happens again?  Should I not nurse as often?  Is it possible he is going through a growth spurt?  Should I shush/pat instead of nurse at some points during the night?  When?  What if he cries?  How long do I shush/pat instead of nurse if he is crying?

I have never tried the dream feed, but to be honest, my ds usually wakes up before I have the chance ... and I am nervous about getting him up for a feed when he is sleeping because if he sleeps a long stretch, it's usually the first part of the night and I don't want to mess that up!

Please note that the times are approximate.  I tried to remember but I didn't write things as the nights went along.

Any comments would be appreciated!

Thank you for your help!

Hiya

Well done on weaning the pacifier :)  I see that Efka is helping you with nursing back to sleep at NW's, therefore I will lock this post for now, so that all of the support and advice is offered to you in one place.

Here is the link to the post in Props Board should anyone want to pop over and offer some insight :D
