Toothpaste
« on: October 22, 2008, 14:59:24 pm »
For the longest time I've just been brushing my son's teeth with water.  Now I used the Kidz Pre-Step Toothpaste, I went through the ingredients and no hidden milk or anything like that.  But he is reacting to it. NASTY diarrhea.  I stopped giving him that toothpaste and am on water again.  Is there any safe toothpaste??  When I plunked in the ingredients onto Wikipedia only one came up that has a high allergic reaction too.  That is probably what he is reacting to.

Melanie:

Wooo you are really having a time.  Personally I would stick with the water.  The pre-toothpaste is really  just for them to accept the toothbrush, it taste sweet so it gets them used to brushing.  Water would be better anyhow.

I would not give him any other kind until you see the allergist.

I have a feeling he is going to come up allergic to all sorts of things.

BTW:  Which ingredient was consirded highly allergenic?

It was Methyl Paraben.  I looked it up again, I guess it is not HIGHLY allergenic, but there have been reported cases of an allergic reaction when ingested.  This is probably what caused his reaction.  Unless, of course, he could have had a reaction to the sweeteners?  I'm not sure if they are at all allergenic.  Anyway, this is what I found on Wikipedia on Methyl Paraben:

Methylparaben is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract or through the skin.[1] It is hydrolyzed to p-hydroxybenzoic acid and rapidly excreted without accumulation in the body.[1] Acute toxicity studies have shown that methylparaben is practically non-toxic by both oral and parenteral administration.[1] In a population with normal skin, methyl paraben is practically non-irritating and non-sensitizing; however allergic reactions to ingested parabens have been reported.

But who knows, the ingredient list is confusing, and wouldn't surprise me if it was something else.

So hard to really tell.  It could have been one of the sweetners too though.  So many lo's react to artificial colors, dyes, etc.
