Is 4 oclock to early for dinner?
« on: October 30, 2008, 16:13:54 pm »
even with a mid afternoon snack, Max is hungry about 4 ish, he goes to bed at 6:30 (asleep by 7:15). We normally try to eat at 5ish but He doesn't eat much then. So do you think that 4 pm is to early, I suppose I could always try and get a snack into him closer to bedtime, its such a battle to get him to eat anything should I just go with him?

Hi there

Our nursery does dinner at 4pm!
My LO has yet to start there properly and has only been from 8-3pm so far but in 2 weeks she'll be there all day so her dinner time will move from 5-5.30pm when I normally do it to 4pm when they do it.

I was worried it was too early and especially that as she only has her milk at 3pm she wouldn't be interested but have told myself that if she eats it, great. If she doesn't, we will feed her when she gets home. And if she does still get hungry at 6ish then we will give her a snack before her bedtime bottle. Something like toast, fruit, yoghurt, cheese, crackers etc.

If he is hungry, then I would say it is ok for dinner at 4pm. Unless you can give him a larger snack to keep him going til dinner at 5pm? What kind of thing do you give him and at what time?

x

What's 'too early'? It's like asking 'what's normal?'.

The best thing you can do is go with what suits your lo and your family. We've done various permientations over the years - having dinner early, having it late, having main meal for lunch and just a sandwich at night. They all fitted what was right with us at the time - if he's too tired to eat at 5pm, and he'll eat a good meal at 4pm, then go for it :). He can always have a little snack before bed if you are worried.
Caroline :)

Thanks, i think I'm gonna just go with what suits him, as long as the rest of his routine stays the same!

Today he ate at 4 and ate more than he has in the last couple of nights so we'll see how we get on.

I don't think its too early, my gal would love to eat dinner at 4 pm.  I would just feed him if he is hungry.  Abby (18 mths) eats all day long, and in the afternoon, she eats half her lunch at 2 (she has the first half before her nap), nurses at 3:30, snack at 4ish, dinner at 5, and snack at 6ish.  She just signs for it and we give her what she wants.  They say grazing is more healthy anyway.

my 13 month old is also hungry at 4 and so instead of giving him a snack and making him wait for dinner and get grumpy as i used to, i now have dinner for him around then and then if he wants a snack later. he likes to eat about every 3 hrs. i guess we just have to listen to their clues.

My boys eat dinner around 4:30 and they do have a snack after their nap.  What time does Max wake up in the morning?  I have early risers so it seems all of our meals are a bit early.   ::)
