2 1/2 year old amount of sleep
« on: October 30, 2008, 18:43:02 pm »
For a month or so our 2 1/2 year old has been waking very early - I think it started when it started getting darker earlier.  It doesn't seem to matter what time we put her to bed - she always wakes between 5:30am-6am.  If fact if we put her to sleep earlier, she usually wakes earlier.  If we put her to sleep later, she wakes earlier.

She takes one nap - anywhere from 1.25 hours to 2.5 hours and I always put her to sleep between 12:30-1pm.

She is typically sleeping about a 9-9.5 hour night and 1.5-2 hour nap - I know this is not enough sleep - how do I get her to sleep more???

Also it is usually taking her about 45 min to go to sleep at night.  We put her down (with the same routine we have been doing for 6 months now) around 7:30 or 8pm and she doesn't go to sleep until 8:15-8:30pm.  What are we doing wrong???

Hi there :)

My son is a bit over 2.5y however his routine hasn't changed much since he turned 2 ;)

630am wake
1230pm sleep, he wakes at 2pm and if he doesn't wake up on his own I wake him
8pm bedtime

Is her room dark?  I'd see if some black poster board or some tin foil on the windows would make some difference is the time she wakes up.  What do you do when she wakes?

Have you tried putting her to nap at 12pm for a few days and not letting sleep past 130/2pm?

Can you think of anything else that changed 1-2m ago?

:) Hugs, you're not doing anything wrong.

Oops, Zoey and I (Hi Zoey!  :-*) were posting at the same time.  Looks like we had some similar advice.

A fellow BWer once told me not to put my LO down for a nap more than 5.75 hrs after he wakes.  It just causes problems.  Could you try that?  I wonder if yours is OT.  It happened with my 2 year old.  He started having NW's and EW's.  He was waking 6:30ish, and I was putting him down at 1.  After a month or so, it started to get bad - NW's, EW's, and cranky.  So I went to putting him down no more than 6 hrs after wake-up, and things have been better.  So try the 5.75 hr rule, and put her down for her nap 11:45/12.  It will probably help with bedtime too.  I'd also try to keep bedtime at exactly the same time if possible.  I also read that up until I think 10 years old, kids should be ASLEEP no later than 8 pm.  I know you have no control over that right now, but maybe if she takes her nap earlier, it will help.

Our routine is this:
Wake:  6:15ish
Nap:  12:15ish (2-3 hrs) - I should probably be putting him down at 12.  I've just been trying to make the adjustment.
In bed:  7:45

Hope that helps.  If you think of it, let me know if you try it, and how things are going.

Brooke

Thanks ladies - I will try the earlier nap and see if it helps.  I have been following closely to the no more than 5 hours of awake time before bed, but hadn't thought to do that in the morning.  It's worth a try.  I'm also dealing with keeping her in her bed when she goes to sleep - tonight she's sleeping in a pack and play cause she wouldn't stay in her big girl bed.  But, I think she's finally asleep - we put her down at 7pm and it is now 8pm.

We moved her into a big girl bed in June - so it's not a new thing.  She just doesn't seem to be that tired when we put her to bed so she keeps getting out.  I am having baby #2 in 2 weeks - so I need the bedtime battles to stop!!

I agree that the earlier nap could very well help.  Let us know how things are going.

Congrats on your new LO.   :)  Hope you can get some good rest in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks, Stacey for your idea - I will probably try that after the time change this weekend.  I'm hoping that Kate doesn't end up waking up at 4:30am on Sunday!!  She woke this morning at 5:40am, went down for a nap just before noon and slept for 1.5 hours, so we'll shoot for a 7:30pm bedtime, with it being Halloween and Grandma coming to town today I'm hoping she'll be ready for bed, but I may be expecting too much!!

Last night was GREAT!  We put her down at 7:30pm, and she was asleep by 7:40pm - it was wonderful - then she slept til 6:30am!!  11 hour night - couldn't believe it!!  Today she went down for nap around 12:45 (Grandma was watching her and kept her up a longer than I wanted!!) and slept til 3:15pm - went to bed later tonight - almost 9pm - but I'm hoping with the time change she will sleep later in the morning - if not we'll do early nap, early bedtime again - it seemed to work well.  Thank you for your help!! Who knew moving nap up earlier would help everything.....

I am back to all kinds of problems since the time change.  She is waking at 5-5:15am, I am putting her down for nap at 11:15 and waking her at 1:15, then bedtime at 7pm.  She still isn't falling asleep til 8pm - therefore is only getting 9 hour night!!!  What do I do???!!!  I am at the end of my rope - she won't go to sleep at night!!!!!!  Do I limit her nap even if she is already not getting enough sleep?  Is this why she won't fall asleep for an hour at bedtime??  HELP!

Thank you for your reassurance, Stacy.  The early mornings are killing me and her taking forever to fall asleep gets old too cause she gets out of bed a lot.  I'll try a shorter nap today and see if that helps her go to sleep quicker at night.  It would be a dream if she would sleep til 6am at this point.
