is this allergy?
« on: November 19, 2008, 02:35:04 am »
my daughter's doc didn't think so but i am scared so would like to hear what other moms think.

my girl had formula till she was 2 month old then become breast feed only.  when she was 5 month old we started cereal for her.  she was fine with rice cereal by itself.  one day my milk wasn't coming enough so i put some formula in the cereal and her face got a lot of rash.  they faded within half an hour and she didn't have any other symptoms.  then there were other occasions that she contacted diary stuff and also got rash and again they faded within half an hour or so without any other symptoms.  the doctors are saying that if it is allergy then she would have gotten more sever symptoms instead of just half an hour rash.  they are suggesting she just has a skin reaction to food when her face get messy.  but i know that she only got rash when the food has diary component like the most recent case the baby food i feed her has heavy cream.

she is 7.5 month now and refuses to take bottles.  my milk is going down so i really want to give her yogurt but afraid she really is allergic to diary....

Interesting.  I disagree with his answer, saying no it is not an allergy because it would have been more severe.  It may not have been enough to cause a huge reaction.  She may only have a contact allergy.

After eating the dairy before, how was mood several hours later or her bowel movements?

It is normal for a baby to get a rash from a new food right around there mouth, just from the food sitting there.  This happened to a friend of mine and she just kept offering the same food and after about 2/3 days he no longer got the rash, but he got it with every new food as a baby.

If all it was, was a rash around her mouth or so and no other major major symptoms, then I would try again.  I would wait about another month or so though.  I know here in the US, they don't recommend yogurt until 9 months old and full dairy milk until 12 months.

Why not try with some regular milk based formula and see how she does again.

she didn't have any symptom beside the rash around her mouth and those rash didn't seem to bother her as i didn't see her scratching them.  she didn't get rash for any other food though.  only diary stuff.  it doesn't make sense since she had it before and i am drinking milk and she didn't have any problem with my milk.  but i am scared...

I would be too, but all you can do is try slowly.  Maybe try something that has dairy cooked into it first and see how she does.
