PLEASE HELP (AGAIN)! 45 minute naps and early waking!
« on: November 19, 2008, 20:11:41 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to this site, so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post for addressing both these topics, but I'll give it a shot  :)

My DD is 4 mo and 1 week old.  She is on an approximate 3 hr 15 min to 3 hr 30 min schedule.  She's been short napping (stirs at 38 min, jolts/wakes at 42 minutes) since she was about 9 weeks old.  Sometimes when she wakes from her naps she'll be happy for about 5 minutes and then start fussing/crying.  I've been going in when she starts crying and reswaddling, reinserting paci, putting one hand over her eyes and putting my hands on her to stop jolts until she goes through the 20 minute fall asleep cycle.  At first, I had to have my hands on her the whole time, but she is more low-maintenance now, needing my hands just when she jolts at 8, 10, 20 minutes.  Sometimes she doesn't need the hands on the 20 min jolt.  She usually spits her paci out part-way through the 20 minute cycle.  So I'm hoping she's not addicted to her paci, but wondering if that's what's keeping her from falling back asleep on her own.  She's trying to find her thumb but doesn't always succeed, and then flails.

She also wakes up about 4 or 4:30 every morning and is happy until about 5, when she wants to go back to sleep (we need to reswaddle and do the pressure thing to get her to do this usually).  She is not hungry at this time.

I'm thinking I need to possibly slowly extend her wake time.  Here is an example of her schedule:

5:30 or 6:00 AM - Eat
Sometimes sleep again til 7:00 or 7:30, then A time for about 1 1/2 hrs, when she eats again and then naps.  (I know this is the wrong order, but I can't make myself get up at 5:30!)
9:00-9:45 Sleep
9:45-10:15 Putting her back to sleep
10:15-11:45 Sleep (sometimes I can't get her back to sleep though)
11:45 A
12:15 E
1:00 or so Sleeps for 45 minute nap, then put back to sleep
3:00 A
3:30 E
4:30 S
5:45 A
7:00 E, then bedtime
Awakes at 4 or 4:30 am EVERY morning!  But only since she turned 4 months!  Like I said, though, she's not hungry.  Before she was 4 months, she would wake 2 or 3 times a night just to be reswaddled/paci-ed.  So I guess it's sort-of an improvement, except now, she's wants to be up and play at 4 AM!

I've tried following Tracy's instructions of keeping them up only for 30 minutes after the feed time if you can't get them back to sleep after a short nap, and I think that's why her "schedule" is so out of whack.  My fault, totally, for probably not being very consistent for several days at a time and getting things in the right order again.  I really am stressed about having to go in and pressure her through every nap, since I also have a 2 1/2 year old & don't want to park him in front of the TV 3 times a day.  ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated!  Sorry if this is confusing...let me know if clarification is needed.

Huge hugs, I think you are right, you may need some more A time in there as 45 min nap *usually* mean more A time is needed.  I would increase it by 15 mins and see how you go.

Does she have a DF? Wondering if she wakes purely through hunger?  If you did a DF around 10pm then she might sleep a little later? This is the age where they switch to the 4 hr EASY, have you seen some examples of it?

I will get you some links xxx

Whoops, I forgot to say I we give her a dream feed about 10 or 10:15... :)  She has started to wake, just for a minute when we pick her up for that though, could we be interrupting her sleep cycle, resulting in early waking?  From her cues, I don't think she's waking out of hunger at 4 am.  She seems satisfied after feeds throughout the day, she's just really jolly at 4 am!  But I'm not :)  I wish she would go until 7 for her first feed, any ideas on how to stretch that?  Thanks for the link, Emma Lou!!  I will definitely take a look at it.  Any other suggestions are welcome!

hmmmm you could have a point there, sometimes the DF DOES interrupt the sleep cycle, I would let her sleep until she wakes for a feed, she may not wake until like 2-3am and then sleep on until seven :D

Great, I will definitely try that tonight.  It's great to have someone to bounce my ideas off of :)  Thanks!

Well, last night we tried skipping the dream feed, but she woke at 11 pm and started sucking on her fist.  I waited for awhile, but then she began crying for a feed about 11:20.  Then she slept until 2:30, when her brother woke her up with his own crying, after which it took an hour to get her back to sleep!  Then she awoke again at 5:30, but we put her back asleep until 7:15, when she ate.  She was up until 9:15 and has now been napping for 1 1/2 hours!  Hooray for that, but I'm thinking the dream feed is still making her wake up early, since normally she does DF at 10:15/10:30 and wakes at 4 or 4:30 am.  So also it was 6 hours between DF and waking last night.  So, maybe I should try dropping the DF again for a couple more nights to see what happens?  Any thoughts are welcome!

Later I'll post on how naps go for the whole day...hopefully will be a good report!

Well, yesterday she slept through both of her 2 hr naps.  She actually woke up at 45 minutes, but in a few minutes put herself back to sleep.  I think maybe this is because she had longer A time so was able to settle herself back to sleep?  Anyway, we gave her a catnap, which lasted for 1 hr and then got her up for another 45 minutes before she was closing her eyes as I held her at the dinner table!  So I fed her and put her to bed, got her for DF at 10 pm, and she opened her eyes, but don't know if she was awake or just semi-awake.  However, at 3:30 am, she woke up and was fussy and unable to go back to sleep for an hour.  I had to reswaddle a few times and hold her for a few minutes to calm her down.  She slept until 6:15, when she got up to eat.  A time until 8:10, she's been napping now for 1 1/2 hrs, again waking up at 45 min but putting herself back to sleep.  Anyone have any thoughts on the middle of the night waking? A couple of days ago, she was waking at 4:30 happy, but now she is waking cranky.  Is it the transition to longer A times that's making her do this?  Or is it her waking when she takes the DF?  Should I try skipping the DF again?
