How To Get 15 Month Old To Feed Himself -- UPDATE!
« on: November 26, 2008, 19:27:20 pm »
I posted this in the BLW thread, but I don't think anyone saw it, so I'm posting here in hopes for help.:::

Hi, I had a lot of feeding problems with my son who is now 15 months old.  Food allergies and we finally got things straightened out, so we are slowly re-introducing all foods again.  He also gags easily on textured foods and then will proceed to vomit it all back up.  I have been slowly adding real mushed food to his jarred foods.  He now has 1/4 of a large jar with the rest being homemade sweet potato.  He'll eat this without gagging.

I am concerned as he doesn't put a lot of foods in his mouth, only some rice bread (just licks it), and some organic baby Mum Mums (he bites of pieces then spits them out.)

I've tried cutting up cooked veggies and put that in front of him, same with rice puffs, and rice pasta.  He picks them up and plays with them before throwing them on the floor.  Because he doesn't eat much of that I will feed him the rest of the mushed up foods.

Would you guys just not bother with the mushed up food and keep offering the solid version in hopes that one day he'll actually take a bite?  If so does this mean he'll be drinking a ton more formula since he won't be getting much solids?

I really want him to feed himself.

Hi Spectra :)

My personal theory is to keep putting the solid stuff out, and when he's ready he'll try it. Since he's had so many issues I don't blame him for being apprehensive. Being pushy will probably only turn him off more, you know? So I'd just play it cool and he'll get there.

Thanks Jessica for your response.  I will keep doing what I'm doing then.  The other day he did actually start to pick up the bread crumbs and put them in his mouth.  Then he shuddered and spat it out, but hey, it's something!

Spectra, I am having th same problem.  My son is such a monkey, one day he loves something and the next wont touch it.  He has been on the purees since 6 months old and still eats them.  I finally got him to eat the baby Mum Mums and he loves them.  Well, usually sometimes he will take a bite and spit it, but usually he will eat them. I am getting really concerned as he is falling in the charts on weight.  His ped just says push the milk, cheese, and other fatty foods, but the only problem with that is he wont touch them.  How are you getting along?? ANy special tricks you can share??? ???

Hi I just wanted to update as this is exciting for me!  He is now 17 months and for the last two months I've been making sure he has some rice bread or rice rusks at the high chair at every meal.  Usually he bites it off and spits it out.  FINALLY two days ago he started actually eating it!  Chewing it and swallowing it!!  I even gave him a sliced apple yesterday!  So cool.  Persistence and practice worked!

Spectra-just wanted to throw this in, as I have been dealing with this for a while.  How is your lo on weight??  My lo has not been self feeding, and his weight has fallen to the 5% on the chart.  We have an appointment with a feeding specialist to evaluate his behavior during feeding as he will gag, and not pick up any food and put to his mouth.  (other than the Mum Mums, and Cheerios)  I am not saying your lo needs this eval, but may be worth just asking his doctor about.  Otherwise, I would just keep giving finger foods, without being pushy.  Each day our lo will explore something new, not eat it, but look at it.  I think some lo's just wait and do things on their own terms!!  I know mine is like that!!  Good luck, and keep us posted!!

Well, his weight is really good.  He is about 25 lbs.  I think that has a lot to do with the fact he was on Neocate up until a month ago.  He could not tolerate dairy/soy so the dietitian had him on this special formula.  It is a type of formula that has everything in it and if needed you could be on this formula and never eat and would still gain weight.

They wanted him on this formula because of his allergy and because he has other food allergies such as gluten and egg, which makes it a bit more difficult to find safe foods for him.  Because my son is like yours in that he wouldn't self feed, and when he would try he would just gag and throw everything up they told me to keep him on the formula until he eats more.  They told me to keep offering finger foods at every meal.

They were quite surprised to see him gaining weight and he's not a tiny guy at all.  I think because of that they are not concerned and hope that he is just a slow starter.  He's doing really well now.  I have these Heinze mini rice cakes, honey flavoured, and he is currently eating and chewing it right now.  He's really taken to it and is now actually willing to eat other foods.

It was a slow process and was worried that I'd have to do what you are currently doing, but he seemed to just get better on his own.  I hope the feeding specialist will be able to help you out.  I've been reading your thread as well, and I know how frustrating and worrying it can be.  Hope things go better for you soon!

Thanks.  I am looking forward to the feeding clinic, and hoping for some useful information.  I am just so worried because of his weight.  He has dropped down to the 5% on the chart and he only weights 19 lbs. for a 15 month old.  You have a good sized guy, and I hope things are going well for you.  About the formula you give him.  Is it prescription?  I have not heard of it.  I could have used something like that, as I really worry about my lo when he is sick because he will not eat ANYTHING!  Where do you get it?  Are you in the UK?  I am not sure if we have something like that in the states.  Hope you are well!!

Oh yes, you definitely have Neocate in the US.  It is a hypoallergenic formula.  I am in Canada.  It is prescription, but you can buy it at stores too.  In the states though it is expensive and some health insurance will cover it.  Here is the website for the formula:  http://www.neocate.com/aaa_neocate/1128-neocate-home-page.html  Neocate is really only recommended for infants/toddlers with allergies.

What does your son currently drink?  Is it cows milk or is it formula?  Any formula usually has a lot of nutrients, and many parents choose to stay on formula until the child is two.  Does he drink lots of milk?

He will drink some cows milk, but he had a stomach virus a few days ago, and has not eaten much since.  I have been giving him formula,  since he is not eating much.  I thought I might ask his Dr. about a formula that has more calories in it for now since he is just so small, and such a picky eater.  Looks like the Neocate has double the calories of what he is drinking now.  Maybe there is another formula that has more calories.  I did look it up, and wow it is expensive! But if it works it is totally worth it.

I will keep you posted, as we are going to the feeding specialist this Friday!!

Thanks!!
