What do you bathe your child in - Skin allergies?
« on: November 30, 2008, 23:29:45 pm »
For those of you that deal with eczema, dry skin, kerotosis pilaris, skin allergies, etc.
What do you use to bathe your child?

Tyler is reacting to lots of things even the Dove Sensitive.  I can't do Aveeno because of oats.

Any good product recommendations?

Thanks, Wendy

Hi Wendy.
For my DDs eczema we are using alpha keri oil.
Initially I was just using plain water until a dermatologist friend told me that this is even more dehydrating for their skin. So it was suggested that using a dispersible oil of some sort would help, and it has.

Have you tried any of the Spectro Eczema body wash or creams?  I haven't, but seen their ads.  They are meant for those with eczema.

i use a body bath oil from the chemist for them - called QV bath oil - you use a small capful in the bath water.  i also only bathe them twice a week - if more is necessary due to dirt or whatever i make it a quick bath.

On the advice of our doctor we ahve been using Cetaphil (lotion and bodywash) but one of the ingredients is macadamia nut oil, so if theirs allergies involved it might not be the best choice. I think I'll try the bath oil though, sounds like a good idea.

We tried Cetaphil, but I saw no improvement.

We are bathing nightly because of our bedtime routine, SO I will cut that back to 2/3 nights a week for sure.

We have a dermatologist appt, but not until March :-0

His skin was getting back with going dairy/soy free, then he had a reaction to vienna sausages and it looks awful again :(

I am going to check out those other suggestions.

Thanks so much!!

We use Cetaphil as well.  What lotions do you use after?  I am not a huge fan of steroidal creams but they do the job.  My LO was 4months when he had a horrible outbreak and triamcinilone .1%/eucerin mixed by compounding pharmacy was the only thing that got rid of it.  We also use an oil called Derma Smooth (also called Scalp Oil or Excema Oil).  We found that once we took care of an outbreak we found certain things helped his skin (like Cetaphil) but those things don't clear the outbreak really at all.

I sympathize with you-I feel so bad when LO has an outbreak.  It looks so awful and he itches like crazy!!!

Ivory soap?  Avon skin so soft?

wendy - we kept the nightly bath until they were a bit older and then felt we could remove it safely and never had a problem routine wise.

jenn - for KP i was told no soap.  the girls only ever use hand soap when we have to.  i actually have meant to get QV hand soap for them  for ages.

have you also changed laundry detergent? i use a sensitive skin one that has no perfumes or dyes etc.  i realised i was using regular stain stuff every so often and just this week noticed they came out with a sensitive skin one of that too so have switched as of today.  i only use it to boost the wash every so often but still... their KP has gotten worse this past few months as we transitioned from winter to spring (not like we have a real winter anyway)

We use aalgo in the bath which is a seaweed product. It is basically seaweed that is washed and dried and then made into a powder. It really seems to calm James's skin down when really itchy. James actually likes lying down on his back and relaxing in the water then he starts kicking his legs pretending to swim.

Sorry havent read through other's responses as am in a rush! DS had really really bad ezcema and now has pretty sensitive skin. Avoid ANYTHING with perfume as products with smelliness will cause itchyness. We use a few drops of almond oil (or johnsons oil) in the water of the bath, skin stays super moisturized and soft. Bicarbonate of soda works well too. After bath put on moisturizer daily. We were recommended any 'base' cream which you can get at the pharmacy so the base that all other medicinal creams are mixed with. OR if you are in UK, E45 cream is fab. basically nothing perfumed!

I would be careful using johnsons oil as it can be quite harsh on children with eczema. It is advertised as being for babies sensitive skin but most dermatologists advise against it. Some people with eczema also react to e45 due to the lanolin aswell whilst others it really helps. It is so hard to find the right product for each individual.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have to be honest, I have been using Tide with Febreeze cloths detergent, fabric softner and dyer sheets :-0  I just recently started washing his cloths in ALL clear with Downy clear fabric softner and dryer sheets.

Then it occured to me, that he could be super sensitive and just touching our cloths against him could affect his skin.

If it was the cloths detergent though, why would it just be on his face, legs, arms and well his belly and back now has a very faint rash on it too.. So never mind.

Switching to ALL clear for everything now and getting rid of the other stuff.

I also bought some Cetaphil bar of cleaner to bath him.

We got our determologist appt moved up to December 19th :)  Yeah....

sounds good.  yeah i wash all our stuff in the sensitive stuff.  i went and bought a new container of cream as i have to be honest and say we have not been creaming them up and their skin is definitely worse with the KP lately so i am vowing to do it daily again and see if that is what is missing for us.

hope the changes help some.
