AM or PM?
« on: December 01, 2008, 13:55:30 pm »
Should you always start solids in the morning?  I am looking to start solids very soon and with just some babyrice - most people I have spoken to have done baby rice in the early eve but lots of other literature says to only start with solids in the morning - so confused!!

I know with starting new foods the morning is supposed to be better in case there is a reaction but if it's just a teaspoon of babyrice?

Any help appreciated!

I think they suggest morning as a full tummy of solids could be hard to digest and could upset your LOs sleep. I found my LO couldn't eat a heavy dinner (PM food) til she was 10mths. But for just a spoonul in the beginning, I'm not sure ... I gave her first tastes at around midday.

It is better to introduce a new food in the am as you can see if there is any adverse reaction.  Once you have determine it is ok, you can move it to another time.  Some babies can have severe reactions to baby cereals, the Allergies board is filled with stories.  So it is best to be cautious.

Well he had 2 tsp baby rice at 2.30pm so we shall see?  Do you think I should stick with the baby rice for a few days and see what happens?  I'll probably do it in the morning tomorrow.

yeah i would if you are just starting out, i went with the three day rule, once all the main tastes were done and no reactions i started to mix them.  they are only trying it at the moment so no hurry.

good luck x

So three days for baby rice then what and when did you start to introduce two meals - there's just so much conflicting information out there it's difficult to know where to start - also before or after bottle or completely separate....this'll teach me to read too much!!

I was told BEFORE 6 months you do it AFTER the bottle as milk is still the main food untill 6 months and is meant to compliment the milk not replace and AFTER 6 months you do it BEFORE the bottle as its then meant to replace the milk iykwim HTH

Thanks insonstis.  I've been doing it about half hr before feed so hoepfully not to interrupt feeding too much anyway.  He didn't take to it this morning but tried again this afternoon and he was much happier - so think will stick with afternoons for now!!

It is really recommended that solids be introduced AFTER 6 mos now.  As for the order of bm/formula and solids, it is best to let the babies have their fill with bm/formula THEN give them solids.  By 9/10 mos then the order can be switched to solids THEN bm/formula.  If you are breastfeeding then the order is important if you want to maintain your supply.  BM/formula is by far more important to a young baby than solids until 12 mos.

i could never get logan to have milk then food at the same time so i always had an hour apart from each thing so milk first then say lunch an hour later.

i started with pureed carrot, then potato, mainly the veg and some fruit it did take us a couple of weeks, once i knew he was getting used to it, i started to mix it up carrot with potato for lunch, i think i moved to two meals around the second week when he was emptying all bottles and his lunch.

just remember the food part is not important at the moment so dont get stressed if lo isnt eating all of it, i saw some people and they were really agitated as lo wasnt eating, ive found even now if logan doesnt want it that's fine, they will never go hungry and they will eat as much as they want.

Thanks annemarie.  I'm not worried about how much he eats I know he has plenty of milk and like you say he won't go hungry!

I'm just enjoying watching him get it everywhere!!

Yeah I gave him the spoon yesterday - which he had been most helpful with - just a bit long and thin though and decided to gag himself...ooopps!!
