Heating Organic Foods
« on: December 08, 2008, 05:41:53 am »
Hi Ladies,

I have been giving Tristan some organic apple sauce and organic butternut in the afternoon with his expressed breastmilk bottle?
It has been reccomended that with regards to heating baby food that you have to heat it to hot and then allow to cool before getting baby to eat.
By heating the food to hot, does that not diminish the nutricional value in the food? Kinda like heating a bottle in the microwave of expressed milk kills off some of the minerals and vitamins etc...

Thanks,
Claudia

Hi. I only feed my daughter organic fruits and veggies. But I make them myself by steaming them until soft and then adding some of the cooking liquid and blending. Are you refering to jarred baby food? Jarred baby food is already pasteurized which means it has been heated to a high temp. so no need to reheat high. There is generally less nutritional value in terms of vitamins and enzymes, in jarred baby food versus making your own and freezing it in portions. But personally I would choose the organic jarred food over non organic. Hope this helps a bit.

When I was feeding ds purees, I just reheat the frozen portions till it's room temp.  Usually the only thing I reheat to steaming hot are meat products.  Are you reheating it with a microwave?  I know some people don't like to use the microwave for this reason.

I use boiled water to heat and drop the jar into a tub to take the chill off it. I dont like microwaves to heat Tristans food or bottles...

I really want to make my own purees but at the moment my home is in turmoil as I am in the process of moving house!

Have eyed some really great recipes that am going to try in the new year.... yayyyy!!!

Thanks for the tips and feedback.

I am the same in that I don't use a microwave. I use the boiling water method. My daughter still likes her food quite warm. This extra step might come back to haunt me later, but for now I am obliging. lol.  ;D
