one month old--eating to fast??? not sure what to do
« on: December 16, 2008, 10:45:18 am »
Hi,
My little one is 4 weeks old and I have been following the EASY plan for about a couple of days and it seems to be going well. I have a concern that she eats too fast. Right now she takes about 3 and 1/2 ounces at each feed but it takes the most 15 minutes. I try to get her to take more but either she is too sleepy or refuses the bottle. Sometimes she finishes in 10 minutes...at her night feeds (2 am and 5 am) she does take 4 ounces. I was hoping that soon her night feeds would get further apart but no luck yet. Is she eating too fast? What can I do to get her to eat more in the daytime? She weighs about 8lbs.

Thanks

Hi there,

I think it sounds fine at this age :)  Its great she drinks it quickly, and 3-3 1/2 ozs sounds good to me :)

Also the 2 night feeds are about right, I would expect that for a good while yet.

I would say she refuses more because she has had enough.  Signs she is ready for more milk would be that she drains the bottle and continues looking for more milk and displaying hungry cues and that she displays feeding cues before the "normal" time she normally wants to feed.

She is still so tiny and it sounds like she is doing all the normal things, so I wouldnt worry right now :)

Thank you for your feedback/ I just wanted to see what others thought b/c I was looking at the EASY routine and the time for feeding seemed so long compared to what I have been doing. The A time seems long too. Just now she got up, ate only 2 oz, I changed her and she was fast asleep again ..all in a 35 minute period. I dont know if she will sleep 2 hours now so my routine timing might be off. Oh well.
What do you think?

I completely agree with Emmas advice.  At this age, they are going to be waking in the nights for a feed as their tummy is so small and can only hold a small amount of milk.

A proper EASY does not really start until your lo is about 6-8 weeks old.  At this age you are looking more at following a lose EASY, as long as your lo has her E time A time and S time that is fine.

Also it is not uncommon for lo's of such a young age to only be able to go 2 - 2.5 hours between feeds in the day.

Sounds like you are following your lo's cues.  At this age A time is probably no more than 45 mins MAX and that includes the time your lo takes to it.  A time is the whole time your lo is awake.
