green poo
« on: December 22, 2008, 17:08:53 pm »
My DD has had some tinges of dark green in her poos since last thurs.  It varies to degree, with some being mostly yellow and a little one just now being quite green.  The other change is she is feeding only one side at some feeds.  She cries and fusses when I try to put her on other side.  She used to always take both sides and feed for 40-45 mins.  Now can be 20 mins and breast still squirting some white milk(not creamy) when I check if it's empty.  Checked her weight today and she's put on more than usual in last week and half-13oz.  Can't deceide if I should be worrying or not!!!  Would appreciate advice  ;)

Hi there!  How old is your DD?  It sounds rather like she's just had a growth spurt, and maybe things are starting to settle down again.  The green poo can be due to a fast letdown, and it can also be due to a bit more foremilk than hind (so the watery vs creamy stuff, as you've been noticing).  Have you checked this out from the FAQs?

Green isn't necessarily bad.  How old is lo?  Lo's can be done in 20 min; they do tend to get more efficient as time goes.  And it's not unusual to get something out when you try to express after a feed.

Is dd having plenty of wet diapers?
Is she gaining weight? (evidently yes)
Is she contented after a feed?
If yes to all, then you're doing fine.  :)

Is she doing anything else unusual?  (temp, fussier than normal, etc)

One last thing... check out this thread:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=114674.0

Thanks so much for responses.  As always there is a wealth of info on this site and very helpful people!  We've had a normal poo this morning and hopefully I'll learn how she's changing her feeding habits too soon.  She's nearly 10wk btw.

One other note: We saw a lactation consultant for another problem, but one of the things she told us was that lots of babies have an aversion to cow's milk (if the mom drinks too much), which can cause the green poop.  So I went off dairy a couple of weeks ago and for a while was seeing a big difference.  The green poop has made its return lately, but I think it's because I haven't been eating enough fiber (for some reason the poop tends to be green when my LO is constipated...).

That has happened with my lo from time to time too, but it always goes back to normal within a day or so. I was a little worried the first time, but since it always goes back to normal, I don't worry too much. Probably something I ate or too much foremilk.
