Early wakings
« on: January 04, 2009, 21:37:57 pm »
Hi
My 8mth old lo wakes up typically between 5:15 and 5:30 am in the morning but she wakes up with only a few grimbles and is content for about 1/2 hr before crying out so I can't use PU/PD to get her back to sleep. Any ideas about how to get her to sleep longer? she is going to sleep at approx. 7pm every night.  She sleeps really well during the day so I don't think it can be due to being OT.  Her routine is like this:
5:15am wake up
6:15/6:30 milk
7am - 8:30 sleep
8:45 breakfast
10:30 milk
11:00 - 12:30 sleep
12:45 lunch
2:45 milk
3:30 - 4:00 sleep
4:30 dinner
6:15 milk
7:00 bed

many thanks
Annie

Hi there,

For some reason 8 months is a very common age for parents to post about sleep troubles and disturbances. I am not sure quite why so many little ones go through this but my ds did too.

Did you recently wean your lo from the dream feed? If so, that could possibly have to do with the EWs. With a DF a lo sleeps about 11 or 12 hours but only goes about 8 or 9 hours without eating. So even though he or she is capable of going longer, they are not used to going 11 or 12 hours yet. With my lo we started doing an early morning feed in the dark and putting him back to bed, which we eventually weaned (or actually he dropped) a month or 2 later. It worked most of the time unless he had a poo and we had to change it - sometimes this just reinforced his being awake. You will know best of course if this will help for your lo.

In caes that doesn't solve it, here is a link with other common reasons for EWs: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=87109.0
You might want to try doing an early bedtime for a little while and then pushing up nap times little by little each day to extend A times.

thanks for that, yes I have just recently dropped a DF, well about a month ago, I did it the BW way which worked well. she doesn't grimble for feed as soon as she wakes up in the morning so not sure if it is that, think maybe because she's going back down to sleep again really soon that that is forming the last part of her night sleep cycle (as it pointed out in the link that you sent) so will try putting her down to sleep abit later bit by bit and see if that works.

thanks again, you've been a big help :)
