earlier and earlier wakings
« on: January 05, 2009, 21:17:07 pm »
I have a 10 week old ds who has been on 3hr easy since birth, no sleep problems during the day- he is only a 45 min napper but is not overtired by the end of the day so it seems to work for him. He goes to bed at 8pm after a bath, bottle story starting at 7.30pm. He initially slept till 6am but has progressively got earlier to 5am and now 4am wakings for his first morning feed. I realise the summer heat here is probably not making it easy for him to sleep but Im scared he is just going to keep getting earlier.
When he wakes he will occasionally go back to sleep after having his pacifier put back in but more often needs feeding and will then sleep through till 7.30am.
Am I expecting too much to ask him to sleep 10-11hrs at this age? or is this something I can help him to overcome?

He refuses to clusterfeed before bed and has 200ml for each feed during the day, so is getting more than enough formula, I cant stay up late enough to do a dreamfeed so thats not really an option.
Any ideas anyone??

He probably does need a DF at that age and there is a growth spurt coming up (it might be happening already). You could try going to bed for a couple of hours, setting your alarm and doing DF at 11pm - that way you don't have to spend the entire evening waiting to go to bed!

How are you doing redpaint? Am interested because at about 8 weeks, my LOs night wakings got worse, not better. Went from about 5am all the way back to 1am, we've had a battle ever since. Only now is it improving and he's 15 weeks! It's really irritating when you feel like you're moving backwards, not forwards!

Hi
He seems to be settling down and we now have a 4.30am waking every day or two rather than every day.
Our routine at present is
E-5.30
S-5.45-8.30
E-8.30
A- 1.5hrs
S-1hr
A-11-11.30
E-11.30
A-1hr
S-45-1.5hrs
E-2.30

etc, etc
He will only nap for 45 min at a time so has another A time before each feed.Isnt overtired by the end of the day so seems to suit him
Eats at 5.30, 8.30, 11.30, 2.30pm, 5.30pm and bedtime feed at 7.30pm.
He has a bath at 7.30, story and bottle for his wind down A time
And settles immediately without a word

Ive tried altering his A time but if he goes to bed under/overtired he cries, and tried having him try and sleep untill his next feed but without much success-hes just not a big daytime sleeper.
We cant throw in an extra feed as he wont take it, and he refuses a dreamfeed-likes his sleep too much
Im just at a bit of a loss as to why he suddenly feels the need to wake earlier, my only thought is that its his reflux playing up or the summer heat
