Drinking water
« on: January 06, 2009, 06:59:37 am »
Hi,
My DD is 9 months old. I have been giving her a sippy cup with water since she was 6 months old. Back then, she thought it was funny to tip the cup up and have water come into her mouth. She didn't drink a lot though. Then she had gastro with diarrhoea and vomiting etc, and didn't want to drink anything - we had to syringe electrolyte into her. After the gastro she wasn't interested in even touching that sippy cup. I bought a very simple straw cup and she quickly learnt how to suck on the straw and found that fun. She still didn't drink a lot but would have a few sucks. Then she learnt how to blow bubbles! For a while she would still drink before blowing bubbles, but now as soon as she gets it she will just blow bubbles. Won't drink any. So, I've offered her the old cup back. She will take a sip or two but that's it.

She will drink water out of a normal glass (the one I'm drinking from!).  I've seen these ones http://www.amadeusail.co.uk/amadeus-productf.html in the shops, but she's only 9 months, and I don't think she'll be able to coordinate enough to hold it and tip it up.

So basically - anyone got any other tips on how to get her to drink more water?

hi, she is probably get lots of water from her milk (bottle or breast) so doesn't need a lot. As long as she is happy to play with it, and unless it's really hot or she doesn't have many wet nappies I wouldn't worry. I think as long as it's fun for her, you are setting up good habits for the future.
I would let her regulate herself, she will know when she's thirsty!

Josie has been drinking from a doidy cup from around 7 months. She uses it completely independently. Might work for you. It solves the tipping problem:

Thanks for your replies.

mum101 - it is very hot at the moment, and I saw the community nurse today who wants her to drink more water. I think she is probably fine though, and you're right - I do want to make sure she has good habits for the future.

Samuel's mum - that cup looks very interesting. I've done a quick search and that brand don't appear to be available here. Good to know though that the concept works on a young one. I'll check to see if there's anything similar around.

If you can't find one I'd be happy to post one to you. It's very light. You really need that slant to make it work.

You should be able to get a doidy cup. here is an australian link if that is where you are from http://www.bubshack.com.au/
Otherwise search 'doidy' in your country on google.

Thanks Samuel's mum for the offer to post and Tansy for the link in Australia. My brother lives in Australia so I'll see how we go and then might get him to post me one - it'll probably be cheaper than sending from UK.

The good news is that we might not need it. It's been unbelieveably hot here the past few days (yesterdays was very nearly a record high at 37 degrees C.). And she's been drinking rather than just taking one sip. I'll see if it continues!

Thanks!

I give my daughter water with her solids and she's taking it really well. At first she would never touch the stuff but seems to be ok with it now.

I use NUK bottle to give water to my DD, it's small and easy for her to hold, no mess and the teat is different from the bottles I use for formula so she doesn't get confused.

That's exactly the same one as we use!
