I turned my baby yellow. Help.
« on: January 07, 2009, 22:10:37 pm »
Hi everyone,
I have a little boy, 10.5 months old today and he is a eating champion,  will devour anything you put in front of him.  I have been making all my own baby food since day one and I think I must have gotten a little carried away with orange food as he turned a shade of yellow.  I know it's not jaundice, his eyes are white as can be.  He has been that way now, although it has gotten better, since mid november.  Since we noticed this I stopped cooking him any orange food,  but I'm running out of food ideas and it can't be balanced for his diet to have no orange foods can it??  If anyone can help me, with suggestions or support.  I feed him spinach....perhaps that is high in beta caroteen??  Does anyone have a list of foods to avoid or to eat?? He is getting tired of regular potatos and zucchini....beige and green is all he gets....blaaa. HELP????  Thanks in advance.

No advice, but I did that, too.  You're not alone.  :)

My daughter's yellow, too! I'm embarrassed to share my Christmas photos because she's all yellow with an orange nose!!! My problem, though, is that the orange and yellow foods are the only ones that don't give her a tummy ache at night. It seems like when I give her anything else, she up at night in pain. Any suggestions for non-yellow/orange food that's easy to digest? She can't even do rice! We tried broccoli this week. She gags, but I'm still giving it two more days to make five days. Then we'll move to asparagus and zucchini. We've been doing avocado and egg yolk this week, but those don't seem to be doing well for her, either. I think it's mainly the egg. (I've been trying to bump up the high-calorie foods because she's underweight.) I also have black and white beans on the agenda to try soon. The only fruit she can tolerate is bananas and only in moderation - not every day. Ugh. Any suggestions?

Hey New Mommy 724,
I guess I have it easier than I thought, I can only imagine how hard it must be when the only food that doesn't upset her tummy is orange....what a battle.  I know with my boy zucchini was easy as pie for him to digest.  What about apple??  Or pear?  I use a rasp ( fine grater ) for the fruit and it comes out really smooth, I then sometimes sprinkle it with cinnamon and spread it over softly toasted bread.  How are breads for her?  What about cheese??  Hmmm, is she gaging because of the chunkyness or the taste?  How about red potatos ( they blend up or mash up really smooth ).  It might sound crazy but try picking up a few of the items that she will eat ( although they upset her tummy) but buy them organic, sometimes it's the pesticides ( sprays used in production ) that trigger upsets.  Just a thought.  Good luck.

hi new mommy 724,

might also be that the high calorie food is hard for her to digest. Also she is well under 1 (I guess) so she doe snot necessarily need her calories and nutrition from solids and solids are more for getting used to at thsi stage, so i woould go with easy to digest stuff, till her digestive system gets more used to it.
9 and 6, oh boy!

I havn't experimented too much with Fish,  we did cod and he liked that, he loves his meat and poultry too.  Am I allowed to feed him salmon at this age??  And which salmon is best...pacific, wild, atlantic??  So confusing.  I remember vaguely that one of them is really bad but can't remember which.

Hi everybody!
I've been there also. At some point, my little boy also became yellow... Beside the yellow/orange vegetables, his doctor also said to cut on the dark green vegetables like broccoli and spinach, because they have much beta-carotten.
Hope this will help.

Hugs

I just saw on the Mike and Juliette show this morning (:)) that wild salmon is the best. I don't know if he can have salmon or not yet, although I do know he could have Tuna.

Heres just an idea, making creamy orange veg puree, could that be less likely to turn babies yellow?. This recipe is from Anabal Karmel book: Cream of Carrot. Make a puree with one large carrot (approx 100ml/3.5oz). Mix 1 tablespoon unflavoured baby rice with 2 tablespoons baby's usual milk. Stir the baby rice mixture into puree.
Have you tried cauliflower, parsnip, crougette?
Hope this helps!
