Just thought I would update where we are at, only because lots of you have helped and advised!
We finally moved to full bottles of Nutramigen about 3 weeks ago. It only took about 10 days of mixing, bit by bit, with soy to get DS to enjoy the Nutramigen and take it without fuss.
The first week was great. The poop wasn't nice, but I expected that.
Second week it started getting worse. Foamy frothy poops. Waterey poops that had us, many many times, deciding to just CUT the vest that DS was wearing down the middle to get it off of him because the poop had EXPLODED all through his clothes.
It got worse and worse.
About a week ago he started fighting the bottles. Straightening out like a board, gruntey-screaming, arching and flailing all around at bottle time. Poops were even worse. Mucousy quite often (sorry....but you gotta know that word will come into one of my poop threads!) Then on Monday this week he was COVERED in rash. Which spread and spread. HV said it looked allergenic.
My follow-up with the paed wasn't until March. I knew my GP would not be confident in diagnosing, so I just took a chance and called the paed's receptionist directly. Said I had an appt in March but could I possibly come earlier? She sounded VERY apologetic when she said the earliest she could do was Thursday! (Three days later, which was today!) I did a little dance.
Went in today. Paed was, once again, AMAZING with us. Anyone out there in St Helen's PCT who needs a paed referral I would suggest you ask for him - Dr. Elbadri. Lovely lovely man. He said he does think that DS needs to go onto elemental formula, suggested Neocate LCP. But, as we have not started DS on solids (next week!) he really felt it was too much for his digestive system to handle at once - the switch to Neocate will involve lots of mixing with Nutramigen to get him used to it. Plus solids. He thought that if there was any change in his actions, his poop, his system, etc, we wouldn't know what it was from, so he's advised that we get him onto solids - said to go very slow, only a few things, wait a full week before adding new foods, etc, all the usual things - and then after about 4 or 5 weeks once we have a few good things in his diet, we can start on Neocate and only give him the proven foods that are okay. After a couple weeks of Neocate, add one more veggie, etc. A lot of that is no-brainer to us BWs who read lots about solids, but I get sooooooo many conflicting non-sensical information from other health professionals that it was nice to have that validation.
He also left it that if we have any difficulties with solids or any further reactions or concerns, to only go to the GP if it is urgent. Otherwise to call his office and leave a message and he will arrange a time that day to phone and discuss on the phone and that he will always make sure to get his infant patients in that same week if the parents are concerned. I thought that was really really good. And we still have out paed dietician in early Feb and another follow up with this paed in early March.
And he told us again how beautiful and intelligent my DS is.
So, that's where we are at now.
I wish those of you with crap paeds could see him, he really sits and listens and has a talk WITH you about things and never makes you feel like a crazy mother!
