17 month old took 12/2 hrs to settle today-unusual
« on: January 17, 2009, 14:45:29 pm »
My 17 month old started to drop her 2nd nap at 10/11 months, I used all the tips to keep it but by 12 months she had fully dropped it and has had a good routinethat seems to work for her since-sleeps8-8/8:30, takes 2-3 hours during the day and is never cranky/showing signs of tiredness during the day.

Routine:
wakes earleiest 7:40/8:30

bedtime routine 12:30ish -usually asleep by 12:45 -1 hour 30 sleep min-3 hrs nap

bedtime routine 7:30 ih-usually asleep by 8ish

(Some minor adjustments made if for e.g she slept in/slept extra or even woke early etc)

Today for the first time ever she took an hour and a half to settle, she chatted first but then get upset and I would go into her and the same cycle repeated itself until she fell asleep!

Now I am not worried...its only one day...but I just remembered about 2/3 weeks ago we took a car trip on her nap time...(She always sleeps in the cot but for the odd time I take the long journey home I go during DD's nap as she gets frustrated on long journeys & she always sleeps AT LEAST and hour and a half), but this day she didnt sleep at all...so I put her to bed early.

So really this is the 2nd time she hasnt settled as easily as usualy for her nap. I know its way to early for dropping the first nap but was reading the thread on that...read some go through phases of dropping naps for a while then re-taking them or dropping them once a month then once a week before fully dropping it...do you think this could be the start of a phase like that or something else?

Any advice appreciated,
Buttonbaby

Well, as you said, one day does not a problem make. I'd give it some more time before you get worried, but it's good to keep an eye on her cues since she seems to tend to drop naps early ;)

Thanks Jessica....yeah not concered yet....but often find dd starts refusing naps, early waking  etc when here routine is ready for a change and then I read up about it and figure it out...so this time I want to be aware of what might be happenign as it occurs and not after :) And as you said DD seems to drop naps early sowant to keep an eye on that.
Thansk again.

Hi Buttonbaby.
I just found your thread after searching for threads related to dropping naps early. My LO is 18 months old and refused her nap for the first time today! She has always gone down really easy for naps and bedtime. So, if she gets upset, then I know it's bc she's not ready for it. It's now 4:20 and she is still in a good mood. I was just wondering, at what age did your LO actually drop her nap? I am thinking of starting a new thread asking for advice, but since your LO seems to have been the same way, I thought I would ask you for advice first.
Thanks!
Heather

Hi heather.
BTW your little one is adorable, well DD is now 2 and 2 months and she still takes her nap and sometimes when at home a good 2(soemtiems 3) hours (1 and a half max in crèche), that day was just an off day and she has had one or two since but really not many. What’s happening now si she is sleeping in...till 9ish and is not ready for a nap till 2 ish but if she sleeps the 2/3 hours she would be up all hours so we kind have to play each day by ear...if she wakes late..she naps late but we don't let her nap past a certain point so she settles at night. In crèche though they all nap at 12:30 so I wake her early those days as otherwise she woudlnt nap there at all and she has an early bedtime.
SO  maybe its just a once off for your Lo too, my Lo sounds like your in that she always goes to bed easily. We tell her its bedtime and oshe goes up the stairs with us happily....sometimes even asking (one days she said bed mummy please mummy) so like you if she gets upset I know she is not ready!

Jessica was right in saying one day does not a problem make in my case and maybe its the same for you...as Dd dropped her first nap early I was keeping an eye on this but she currently seems to still really need her nap!

Best of luck hope it works out or you figure out what is going on!

Thanks for you quick reply!
I am hoping that days like today don't become too frequent just yet! She played happily all afternoon. I saw her first yawn at 4:40. We did dinner right at 5:00, bath at 5:45, pjs and a story at 6:20. Normally, she lays down very easily, wide awake and goes right to sleep. BUT TONIGHT, she was hanging on SO tight to me and did NOT want me to put her down. I knew she was tired, so I actually laid in her crib with her while she went to sleep. As soon as I climbed in there, she went to sleep - maybe 10 minutes. I have NEVER done that before, but I just felt like I needed to tonight. I am interested to see how this night plays out! If this becomes a frequent problem, I will definitely have to seek some advice! But hopefully it is just a rare occassion. (for now, atleast.)
Thanks again! :)
Heather

YES, she did! She slept from 7pm last night to 8am this morning!!! She had 2 short NW...she loses her lovey sometimes and wants to be tucked back in. A 12 hr night is not unusual for her, but 13 hrs  :o  I was suprised! And then she laid down easily for her nap at 1:30 and slept for 1hr 10 min. I know that nap isn't long, but she has always taken short naps, so anything over an hour is considered good around here. And then she laid down just as easily for bedtime. I don't know what was going on with her yesterday, but atleast it didn't throw her off her routine.  :)

Oh brilliant...dd has had a few(very few) days like that..worry its the start of the nap beign drpopped (maybe its the very start) but I can  see she still desperately needs her nap for now so hopefully your LO is a long way off dropping it!
