How long to let newborn (5weeks old) sleep during the day?
« on: January 22, 2009, 19:14:53 pm »
My lo is on easy and eats every 2.5-3hrs during the day. Sometimes I wake him to make sure he doesn't go longer than 3 hours. He will eat, which usually takes 30-40 minutes and be awake for another 30 minutes, or so, after that. His naps usually are about 2 hours during the day. I am wondering if that is too long? He goes down easily, for the most part, so I know he is tired. My question arises because I just watched one of Tracey's videos and she said that naps should be 1-1.5 hours at the most.
I don't feel like I could extend the awake times, so should I wake him after 1.5 hrs of napping??

Thanks!
Susan

Congratulations on your new boy! At five weeks, most can handle around 1hr-1hr 15 mins awake. That's the TOTAL amount of time they are awake, including eating and settling back to sleep. I would let him sleep for 2 hours, waking him up when it is time for his next feed (3 hours from the last one).

HTH?

I totally agree with Anna -- if he's up for an hour eating and diapering and "playing", then sleeps for 2 hours, there's no problem.  You just don't want to let him sleep to far past his next E time or he'll be looking to make up calories in the night, when you really want  him to sleep as long of a stretch as he can.
