Not sure when to start solids now (article included)....
« on: January 27, 2009, 12:02:00 pm »
There is a new study out (below link) that states it might not be a good idea to delay cereal....anyone know anything about this? So should I wait until 6 months? I'm not ready to start him now even though he shows readiness, he is still only just turning 4 months...but I am preparing. Soooooo, just wondering of your thoughts.

Hmmm.  If you note, though, it says those who wait until AFTER 6 months show more signs of allergy and they still conclude you should introduce them between four and six months. So, in my mind, waiting until 6 months still fits in that category.

besjoux, thanks for the article.  It was interesting however I need to point out that it is dated 2006.
There are many benefits & reasons (healthwise and nutritionally-wise and developmentally-wise) to waiting till at least 6 mos to introduce solids.  Bm/formula should be the main source of food for babies until they are are ready.  Starting solids is very individual-based, follow your baby's lead NOT the calendar.  Here at BW, we suggest that solids be delayed until 6 mos  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=118497.0 and  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=94.0.

If your doctor/pediatrician suggests that you start solids earlier, ask for reasons why you should start early.  If you feel that starting solids early will benefit your baby nutritionally, then start.  If not, then wait a bit longer.  There is no rush to replace solids with bm or formula.  Use your judgement to proceed accordingly.
