Signs of UT??
« on: February 04, 2009, 00:15:38 am »
A few days ago, i decided to extend my LOs awake time -- she's 12 weeks now and was only staying up 1:10.  I extended to 1:20 and she did fine that day -- actually napped better than usual.  Now she's had some crazy stuff going on with her naps (victim of the 45 minute monster), and whenever I put her down, she's up within like 20 minutes.  I've tried keeping her up 1:20, tried cutting back to 1:10 or even an hour... it's still happening!  Could she be UNDER tired?  What are the signs of UT??

Thanks!
Ellen

I'm afraid i don't know but interested in what others have to say. My LO is 8 weeks old and managing no more than 1 hour 15 and I always follow the yawn cue at the moment but sometimes I have trouble recently putting him down for a nap, sometimes he gets fussy with the swaddle and sometimes he just starts smiling away at me! I am just thinking if I am putting him down UT  this will only result in OT  as we then have a fight on our hands getting him to sleep!

Today he was yawning away so I took him up for his wind down only after an hour of A but as soon as I swaddled him he started smiling at me and seemed really awake. It then took me over an hour to finally get him to sleep after the smiles had turned in to fussiness and the use of the white noise cd! I guess I want to know why he's giving me cues but not settling well like he used to.  ???

When my son was a lot younger (he's 6 months now) I was soooo worried about him being OT I would swaddle him up at the first, what I thought was, tired cue. He would yawn and that wasnt his tired cue, he was bored!  At 8 weeks I would suggest changing the environment once or twice to make sure they are actually tired and going from there.

I have never read of signs of being undertired other than not falling asleep and not acting tired. My sons cues are eye rubbing and his little eyebrows get red when he's tired.  I would assume as well that they change their cues as they get older. As with today, Wesley rubbed his eyes quite a bit and I put him down, an hour later he still wasnt asleep. The day way shot and he went to bed at 6:15.  Try again tomorrow!!

I hope that helps a small bit, good luck!

Change her scenery and see if that helps.  I only realized he was yawning out of boredem when my MIL came to visit and he didnt do it as much. It was because I would pass him off to her and she was a different face with different songs and things for him to be amused by.

Thanks for that, i'm definatly going to give it a try!  The funny thing is... i've trying to keep activity to a min so as not to overstimulate her, hoping she may stay up a bit longer!! I was thinking she's UT as she often sleeps quite light or wakes early ffrom her naps smily and cooing at me... i think she's trying to tell me something but wasn't sure!!!
