Advice on sleeping when going on holiday
« on: February 04, 2009, 19:15:54 pm »
Hi - am not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but I've been stressing for about 2 months now. My dd who is 11 months now usually is fine with naps and sleeping as long as she is in her crib. She refuses to sleep anywhere else (I've tried a few times to put her in my bed or if we are out at someone's house, to get her to sleep there, but we end up with a meltdown). She's actually a very happy baby until it comes to sleep, if she's not in her crib she screams as if someone's torturing her! I'm travelling back to the UK from the US in march and am stressing soooo much about the plane journey. How do I condition her to sleep in my arms on the plane (after she's been trained not to)? Am pulling my hair out with worry. Please help!

I traveled with my dd when she was just over 5 months, it wasn't such a long flight but since it was a night time flight she fussed a bit but then fall asleep on the seat beside me. I did have to hang a blanket over her head (resting on the backs of her seat and the one in front of us). U can also inquire with the airline if they have a special seats (usually in the fron row of each class) with hanging bassinets, this could help ur lo sleep. If they don't have those u can also ask to be seated alone on a row so she can sleep on the seat beside u.
Other than that there isn't much u can do, so I would just stop stressing as u r only working urself up, it is only a flight and if she doesn't get much sleep on it, she will catch up eventually when u arrive. :)
Hope this helps

Thanks - am definitely working myself up so much that I considered cancelling the whole trip. I'm travelling without dh - but also have just found out that my flight is fully booked...great!!! So chances are that I have a rude, child un-friendly person next to me. Also I'm not sure about the basinette as I heard that certain flights don't let you use them if your child is over a year old (which dd will be) - plus I think it may be too small for her anyway. I'll just grit my teeth and bear it I suppose, have to learn to have a thick skull when it comes to fellow passengers tutting at me! Weep!

U never know u could be sitting next to a lovely old lady who dreamed of having grandkids all her life :)
Plus theres always a crying baby on any flight so what if its urs this time, the passengers will moan about it for a while and forget the next day :D
