Advice on teat size
« on: February 05, 2009, 07:43:56 am »
My 7 month old daugther is currently on Enfamil AR for her reflux. We use TT bottles and were using the no 3 teat which is fast flow for 6 months plus however the teat gets clogged. I then moved onto the TT variflow teat but this seems way too fast for her. It ends up all down her chin and her clothes end up soaked and sometimes she ends up choking on the milk. Does anyone know if there is a size in between these two as I dont know what to use now.

Would she use a different bottle? We used Avent bottles and No 4 teats with Enfamil AR which was fine. The only time we had problems was if we hadn't mixed it properly and still had a few clumps left. Once we found that cold water worked best and made sure we rolled the bottles really well before shaking really well it was ok.

We didn't use the TT, I'm guessing they don't do a No4?

Probably not much help was it :-\

I dont think TT do a number 4. Ive seen a TT teat for thick feeds but the hole looks huge and I think it would be worse than the variflow. Im thinking of making the hole on the TT number 3 bigger but have never done this before.

Is she sucking effectively? I know a friend has put her 6 week old onto TT variflow as he was sucking really hard on the slower teats but getting frustrated. Her HV advised the variflow as he could get more sucking harder/ get less when he needed a break.

I have never tried to make holes bigger, I think you need a sterilised needle to do it - worth a try! It may be worth trying the thicker feed teat although to be honest we have never found the Enfamil to be a lot thicker in the bottles than other formulas.

How is the formula getting clogged?  Is it the powder getting lumpy?

The powder doesnt look lumpy and I mix it with cold water and do exactly what it says on the back of the tin but for some reason she really struggles with the no 3 teat.

We used the TT with the Enfamil formual.  We used the cold milk, but always end up mixing our formula in a larger container.  We used a shaker (that you shake cream in) as it held a lot more liquid, and was able to move around more.  We roll it in our hands for a few minutes, and then shake vigorously up and down, and then transfer to the bottle.  We have not had any lumps since using this.
