18 month old difficulty with spoon/fork, ends up using hands

My 18 month old DD has no problem getting the spoon in her mouth if I put the food on it for her. But when she tries to do it herself, she gets frustrated if she's really hungry and ends up sticking her hand in the bowl and coming out with a fistful of food. I tend to feed her in the beginnign and then when, the starvation has tapered I give her the spoon, but htere is no guarantee she'll use it. Should I be pushing her to use the spoon/fork at this point?

Hey there,
My ds is 21 months old and still doesn´t use the spoon or fork that well. I always give ds a spare spoon when Im feeding him so he can feed himself once in a while. dont push her!! she will learn eventually

I don't think so at her age.  I would just let her practice.  Maybe guide her hand some when she is trying it herself.  At that age, I think I did a lot of finger foods and between I would put things like yogurt on the spoon and let him practice.  Things that stick to the spoon and not fall off as easy would help.

Thank you for the responses. I wasnt sure what I should be encouraging at this age. but I will continiue to allow her to set the pace.

Sometimes my three year old still uses his hand ;D, just keep offering the spoon and she will get it

Agree with pps.  Isaac is very much the way you describe.  James is less so, but still...  ;)
