could a dream feed be resulting in extra weight gain??
« on: February 10, 2009, 11:22:31 am »
My 13 week lo has 180 mls of formula every four hours- 7:30 am and 11:30 am and 3:30 pm and then 7:30 pm and then the 5th feed in the 24 hours is the following morning at around 6:30. She is also given a dreamfeed at 10:30 pm usually around 120mls although she has taken up to 180mls and doesn't seem to ever reject any amount given as a dreamfeed. I was told she is getting chubby..so of course I wondered whether i was doing the dream feed incorrectly???  I guess I don't quite understand as the dreamfeed is essentially extra calories to tide them through the night correct?  Has anyone else expereinced this??

Hi. Who d hell told u ur lo is chubby? They are supposed to be chubby, they are storing the fat which they will use when they start moving around and get active. Unless ur doctor told u that ur lo is on the overweight/obese side (don't even know if thats possible at 13 weeks) than I woudn't even think about it!

Sleeping through the night at 13 weeks is fantastic, if u take away the df I am pretty sure ur lo will end up waking up at night for feeds. U r right, df gives los the calories to keep them going through the night.

If u r worried about ur lo gaining weight too fast have her checked out by ur GP. As far as I know a lot of it depends on their birth weight, my dd was 6lb when she was born so she didn't take 180 mls untill she was about 5 months, my friends son was 11lbs at birth and is taking 150 mls at barely 2 months.

I wouldn't stress about their weight unless its decreasing. Looks like ur lo is doing great so don't mind someones ignorant comments.

Thank you for your reply-that is also what I thought BUT being a first time mom I then got worried that perhaps I am overfeeding-after my intial response of being offended. The person who made this comment was the nurse who gave her the 2nd set of immunisation jabs this morning. She is most definately not overweight and she still can't even fit into the 3-6 months clothes I bought her! I guess that she is around 12 pounds?? This was the first person who ever commented that she is chubby.  She was born weighing 7 lbs and 2 ounces and she was 13 days overdue. At every weigh in she has been right on target. I will be going next week to see if they have any concerns and if they don' then I will chalk it down as a rude comment that had no basis and I will continue as I have been doing. I guess its difficult for me to know how much to feed her for the dreamfeed as she will take anything I offer her! How much would you suggest??  Thanks!

Babies are SUPPOSED to be chubby!!  I would take it as a compliment that you have a healthy baby that eats well!!  So many mom's have to worry about their babies not thriving.  Both my babies were chubby, big and beautiful.  Now my son is 4 and lean as can be, but strong as a horse.  My daughter is 6 months, wearing 18 months clothes!!!    :o :o :o :o

For her dream feed, I would give her a bottle in the amount of of what you give her in 1 bottle during the day.  So if the max she takes at one sitting during the day is 180 mls.  That is what I would give her.

She is doing great for her age!  You are very lucky!
