How to get 3 week old to enjoy bathtime
« on: February 11, 2009, 00:46:07 am »
My 3 week old DS hates bathtime! I've tried just sponging him , while keeping the rest of his body covered up, and this seems the most enjoyable to him (at least he's not screaming!). He seems to be a grumpy/sensitive type and also dislikes diaper/clothing changes. It's also winter here in Canada but we keep the temperature at a comfortable 73/74 degrees. I'd like to eventually make bathtime part of his bedtime routine (like we do for our 23 month old), but for now he's only bathed every 3 days or so, with spot cleaning of his face when needed.

Am I expecting too much for such a young age and hopefully he'll begin to enjoy it more as he gets older? Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried taking a warm bath with him?

No, but that's a great idea. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes! Thanks!

Yeah my DD loves mommy-baby bath time...  if you are nursing, you can offer to nurse while in the water too, which adds even more positive association with the water as a place of relaxation and comfort.
Let us know how you make out!

I agree...!!!

Also...my sil gave me this advice when I had my dd...we'd wash her hair at the kitchen faucet while she was fully clothed, holding her cradle-style. Then later once her hair was completely dry (or even the next day) then we'd give her a bath, but not wash her hair. That seemed to make her more comfy, less cold, and easier to dry off!

Good Luck!

I agree - it is wonderful.  So funny though, I try to get my DH to share the experience with DD so that he doesn't miss out on how wonderful it is, but he's a bit phobic and thinks he needs to wear swim trunks... haha

LOL about the swim trunks!!!! We tried bathing together tonight; an improvement for sure! He still cried but at least not screaming. We'll just take this one day at a time. Thanks for the support everyone!
