seeking mild curry recipes, LO 14mths
« on: February 12, 2009, 09:33:54 am »
hiya,

reading that LOs taste preferences are set by the time they are 2 years old, and dont change again til they are around 7 years old.

so thinking i better get cracking with introducing my 14mth old to more variety!!

have started doing some mild mexican flavours in quasidellas, enchiladas, mini burritos

so now seeking some mild curry recipes to get him started on, please post any that your LO loves???

also any other ideas of new 'flavours' to introduce him to.

thanks
kirry

Stan loves vegetable 'korma' (not a true korma, but a mild, creamy curry). Marking so I can come back and give you the recipe this evening. Also big, big favourites are his daddy's bean chilli, and Moroccan chicken chickpea stew (recipe here: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=35149.15 (msg #20))

When we were first doing purees I'd sometimes add a TEEEEEENY bit of curry powder to orange veggies like squash or carrots; that also works well when you add the veggies to some yogurt. :) YUM! Not a recipe, per se, just one easy-peasy way to introduce the flavor.

Here's my curry recipe - this is a big hit with all 3 of us. Prep all the veggies by cutting them into 1 inch chunks before starting to cook.

Melt a big knob of butter in a pan, add 2 chopped medium onions and cool until golden. Add 3 crushed garlic cloves and a 1.5 inch cube of fresh ginger, peeled and grated. Cook for another couple of mins.

Add 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 tbs ground coriander, 1/2 tsp cardamom seeds (crush a bit between two spoons), 1/2 tsp ground turmeric, 1/2 tsp chilli powder, 2 bay leaves, lots of fresh ground black pepper.

Cook for a few seconds, then start adding the veggies. Potatoes 1st, then I usually do aubergine, mushrooms, green beans but you could also use squash, broccoli, cauliflower, red pepper, etc. Add 200ml water, stir well and leave to cook for 15 mins.

Mix together a small pot of plain yoghurt and a small pot of cream. Take the curry off the heat and stir in the yoghurt/cream mixture.

Serve with rice or naan, sprinkle garam masala over top, and flaked almonds for grownups.

Yum! Hungry now!

thanks anna, that's sounds fab! is aubergine the same as eggplant? still getting used to the uk names for things! and does your DH mind sharing his bean chilli recipe? hunter generally loves anything with beans in it.

Yes, aubergine is eggplant. Forgot to mention that you can do chicken in the same way with the veggies too if you fancy. Will try to get the bean chilli recipe tonight, although I think DH just sort of 'wings it'! Oh also, btw did you notice there's an indian food recipes thread on the Recipe Swap board in the Lounge? Will be bound to be tons more ideas there.
