5 1/2 months old sleep issues
« on: February 12, 2009, 14:46:24 pm »
I have a 5 1/2 month old DS who was an excellent night time sleeper since birth. We started EASY when he was about 1 month old and it was great. The transition to a 4 hour easy wasn't really that "easy" but we succeeded a couple months ago. Things were going well until about 2 weeks ago.
He used to sleep well from about 7/730pm - 7am no problem ( I often woke him at 7 am ). Lately, he's been waking at 5:50am - 600am. I can usually leave him in his crib until 6:30 ( when he starts to cry ).  Nothing has changed in his routine...nothing new around the home. He of course has had some developmental milestones ( sitting up, rolling over ), but thats been going on for awhile now. Just trying to figure out where this new wake up has come from. He is swaddled, so can't really "play" much in the AM and go back to sleep ( I posted another thread about swaddling ). Here is our routine with the new wake up:

Wake up/E 6:30-6:45am 7 oz formula ( actually wakes at about 6, but stays in his crib until 630ish )
A 7:15 - 8:15, wind-down from 815- 830
S 830- 10/1015
E 1045 7 OZ formula
A 1115- 1215/1220 wind-down till 1230
S 1245 - 200/215
E 245
A 315- 430
S 445-530 ( catnap )
E 545/6
A 615-645 Bath, massage,cuddle, 2 ounces top up feed
S 7 - 715pm ( usually falls asleep well on his own, needs a little help if OT )
Dream feed around 10pm

He just seems a bit OT throughout the day, and sometimes can barely make it for the 2 hours "A" time.
We tried solid foods a week or so ago. He gobbled it up for 2-3 days, and is now not interested. I've tried feeding him 1 hour after his bottle ( but he's already getting tired by then, and just gets frustrated ).

Looking for any advice.....he was a happy baby, doing great on EASY, and now he just seems tired and grumpy.

Thanks!!

Hi!! Sorry you're having EW!!

For the EW try to increase his 1st a time by 15mins.  The 1st nap is like an extension of their night sleep, so if it's a bit later he will learn that he cannot count on it, so he'd better sleep in.  It worked with ds. Everytime we had an EW, I extended his first A time and after some days, the EW disappeared.

I do not think your LO is OT because he is not having short naps.  You say he is cranky during the day, could it be teething??
