Full feed 10 minutes??
« on: February 14, 2009, 16:20:08 pm »
Is it possible that my daughter manages to get all the milk she needs in 10 minutes? She downs one breast in 10 minutes and then start moving her heard and playing with my nipple instead of drinking. When I check to see if there is still milk, there is, so she's not emptying the breast, but appears to be done. And I give her only one breast. Sometimes after I burp her she'll drink for another 2-3 minutes, but that's it. I tried offering her the other breast to see if the problem was that the flow had gotten slower, but she does the same thing: goes on and off the boob, suckling bit but not really drinking anything.

But she is gaining weight steadily and drinking every 2 1/2 - 3 hours. She's actually pretty big for her age; she's 12 weeks old and weighs 15 pounds.

I tried to make her drink for 25 minutes, and she did resume drinking after my insisting for several minutes, but then she was spitting up like crazy that day, which she never does and which leads me to think that the extra amount of milk I made her drink was not needed.

Anybody has a lo who drinks really fast?

Yeh, my LO was always an incredibly efficient feeder. I was always a bit bewildered reading books which say 'feed 20 mins'. Sounds like she's doing great.

Yep, quick drinker here too--sometimes even less than 10 min, but she seems to be emptying my breast. If I try and make her drink longer or drink from the other side, she does the exact same thing as your dd... I think you will always be able to get some milk out, cause you will never be truly "empty" (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).  Sounds like your lo is doing fine, so I wouldn't worry about it.....

PP is right:  you are never truly empty.  Even when your LO drains the breast, you can still squeeze a bit more out.   At 3 months, BF babies can be very very efficient.  I was amazed how freeing it was when DD was taking full feeds in 7-10 minutes... no more sitting around while she nursed for 45 minutes like she did in the first 4 weeks of her life (now that was torture!)  Now at 7 months, she's getting everything she wants in no time flat, and I couldn't make her drink more if I tried.  BF babies are notoriously good at getting and taking what they need.  If she's happy between feeds and gaining well, then feel confident knowing nature is doing what it does best.

My DS was a power eater too so don't worry.  As long as she's gaining weight and has enough wet diapers than it's all good!  Think of it this way, you'll never have to take a long time feeding her when you're out and about.  It's great!

Both mine would slug back a full feed in no more than four minutes flat, even in the early days! Your dd is my kinda gal; the quicker you eat, the more time you have to do other stuff! I can assure you things will change when she morphs into a toddler though. Meals can take anywhere up to two days to consume.

Thanks for everyone's support! You erased the self-doubt I had... and confirmed what I knew inside: my girl is doing just fine!

Gus has always been a very quick eater.  I also worried about it a lot, especially as everyone else's babies were nursing for at least 20 mins.  His weight gain always reassured me though that he was getting enough.

DD is also a quick feeder. Now at 6mo she's done within 5min. I kind of miss the cuddle time though. Oh and no matter how much she drains the breast, it never completely empties as they constantly produce.

I had the same question so I did not have to post again, Sebastian is 13 weeks and 14 pounds, and he will only take 10 min max every feed some times less after that he will start playing with my booby, I thought that I might not have enough milk, but he seems to gain weight well.
Thank you all for the information and support.

Same here.  I was going to ask this question as well.  I have a 5 month old 18 pounder who now eats within 10 minutes.  I was a little alarmed at first - he used to take 1/2 an hour.  But he's a happy baby, and nice and plump.  Looks like these babies just know what they want!
