What have you all given as a first successful food
« on: February 25, 2009, 19:07:56 pm »
I've been trying to introduce dd to solides for about 3 weeks now but she just doesn't like anything. First I tried rice cereal, then oatmeal cereal, banana. She just makes disgusted faces even mixed with breast milk. I may try sweet potatoes next but I'm just discouraged the she wants nothing but milk. She is just opposite to DS. He just loved anything I gave him even on the first try and I couldn't feed him quick enough. Any thoughts anyone or suggestions.

First food for us was steamed apple.   Yummy!!   Its still my standby for when he's only eaten a tiny bit of his savoury "main course" ;).   I've got a recipe book that suggests fussier eaters might like food diluted with lots of BM or formula, then gradually decrease the ratio.

Try mushed pears or even Avacado.

Oh yeah!!  Puree half an avocado with 3/4 banana (sounds weird, tastes lovely - I'd eat it!) - maybe some formula in there too...

With dd1 I found that she made a lot of disgusted faces with early foods - as time went on, and she started eating absolutely everything I realised that actually she hadn't quite been ready when I started weaning.  I would keep trying but not forcing the issue.

The most popular early food for us was pureed apple as well - seems to work for a lot of los.

Apple sauce and sweet potatoes were and are our favorites.  I found that if I mixed things with either one she would be more likely to eat it.  She is pretty fussy but definitely likes her fruits.

Thanks all, I'm gonna try sweet potato today, and apple in a few days. I think I'll try mixing everything with lots of breast milk. Then I'll do avocado and banana mix next week. I did this one for DS and he loved it. I think I'm gonna have a hard time with solids with this girl. I had to stop giving vit D drops as she threw up everytime. You would think a breastfed baby would be easier to feed solids as they are used to a variety of flavors. I had EBM in the fridge the other day and it smelled like garlic.

Squash, yes, my DD loved and still does love squash. LOL! My DD actually wasn't really into fruits, she much preferred her veggies. It took a bit of persuasion for her to open up to the green ones, but she did eventually. Now she really loves mixed veggies by gerber. It's got carrots, peas and spinach in it!

My DD seems to love all the foods we've given her so far. Squash, carrots, green beans, peas, sweet potatoes, pears. The only things was, once she got vegetables and some fruits, she stopped liking her baby cereal! (Now I started mixing it with fruit and she thinks that's just delicious.)

That's what I was thinking, Nicole....that she might never try the veggies once she has fruit!!  I"d definitely try mixing the fruit into the cereal and see if that helps.

I'll bet she loves the sweet potatoes!!!

We tried sweet potatoes and she actually took it. Looks like she's not much into cereal. I was hoping she would like it because of the extra iron and nutrients added to them. I'll keep offering though, and maybe mix it with whatever she ends up liking.

Nicole, I did this with DS. Even though he ate everything, I almost always added cereal to his fruit and veggies until he got off purees.

It was funny because she LOVED the cereal when she was eating only that. Then I gave her some after a week or two of getting the stage one foods and the look she gave me was too funny. She just laughed and spit it out. My husband tried at another time and she did the same thing. It was as if she was saying, "Mom, seriously, give me a break, this stuff tastes like cardboard, I want some of the good stuff!"

I started with pears which went over well, then did sweet potatoe, avocado, banana and carrot.  DS really likes the sweet potatoes, and LOVES the carrots.  He didn't like the avocado, and he's doing ok with the bananas.  I think the sweet potatoe is a good one to try.  Good luck!
