Milk or solids first?
« on: February 27, 2009, 04:26:32 am »
Hi, I was just reading the FAQ's for some tips on feeding my 10 mo old solids and some of the threads have solids first with milk and hour later and others are the opposite.  What is best?  Right now I breast feed first and an hour later give solids - should I switch it?

Also, any suggestions for good finger foods would be great - she still eats the pureed baby food and doesn't seem to enjoy other textures.  She'll eat rice crackers, and toast/bread as finger foods so far.  Tomorrow I'll try some scrambled egg yolk.  I've tried slivered grapes, watermelon, etc... (she didn't like them) Thanks!  :)

I believe the professional recommendation is milk first and then solids.  However, if I had followed that my babies would never have started solids.  When I started out I did solids first and then milk.  They still seemed to take a really good milk feed, so I wasn't worried.  Maybe you want to give half the usual milk first, then solids, then the remaining milk.  I feed from one side, do solids, then feed from the other side.  It helps us out.

I have always found the following to be good foods for helping with texture issues: oatmeal, cottage cheese and avocado.  They have some substance but are sort of disguised like a puree if mashed or watery enough.

Since your lo is 10mos, you can do solids first then milk.  Most moms start to switch the order at around 9/10mos.  Just make sure that the milk intake does not decrease drastically.  Some moms found that by feeding milk first then solids they can ensure that their los still get the minimum amount of milk.  I still nursed ds 4X at this age despite him being really great with solids as I wanted to ensure that he gets the bm.

Check out the threads in the Baby Food Recipes at the top of this board for some great suggestions for finger food and meal ideas.  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=10.0

Great question... I was wondering that myself.  I have a question for you:  at 10 months, how many BFs does your LO get a day?

As for finger foods, we've had great success with:  Cheerios or baby "puffs", french fried sweet potatoes, broccoli trees...

Hi Jana, my lo gets 4 bf a day, sometimes 5 if she seems hungry.

Thanks everyone for all the advice :)
