How much milk and solids for a 6 month old ladies?
« on: March 03, 2009, 07:18:07 am »
Hi all, I'd like your thoughts and experience...I'm curious about how much other los are/were eating.  My 24 week old boy is having as follows:

7am- 180/210 bottle
8am- babyrice/mashed banana etc. He eats around 3 teaspoonfuls.

11am- 180/210 bottle
12pm- sweet potato/ buttenut squash puree etc. He eats around 3 teaspoons.

3pm- 180/210 bottle

7pm- 180/210 bottle

11pm- 140 bottle

Is this the usual amount?? This is a usual day, not every day!
I would love you all to share on this!!  :)

Hi Sarah,

It is really hard to put a definite amount on bm/formula and solids a baby as there are so many factors (weight, hi/lo metabolism, level of mobility, etc) that can affect an appetite, even the appetite of a baby can change from day to day/week to week/ etc.  Check out these threads:

Just remember that formula/bm should still be the main source of his nutrition as it has all the calories, nutrients and fats for optimal brain and body development.

Hi Sarah

My baby has a similar routine to yours.  He is just shy of 7 months and i have just stepped up his solids to include 3 meals a day and two courses at lunch and tea.  He eats approx:

7.30am - 150 ml formula
8.30 am - porridge made with 90 ml formula - eats quite a bit - about 3 tablespoons
11.00 am - 120 ml formula
12 noon - veggies e.g. carrot and peas - eats about 3 tablespoons, followed by half pot yogurt
3.oo pm - 150 ml formula
5.00 pm - fish and veg - eats about 3 tablespoons followed by banana slices as finger food
7.00 pm - 200 ml formula and bed

On this he sleeps through until 7.30am.

I started him on food about 6 weeks ago and have just gradually stepped up the volume.  He used to have formula at 12 noon and 5pm so in order to replace those completely i have had to increase his food intake, adding a second course.  I always had him on 6 bottles a day as this seemed to allow him to sleep through the night.  But i thought 6 bottles and food was excessive and he is now happy to eat lunch and tea withno milk :o)

Hope this helps

At 6 months that is about the same amount my LO was eating (although he only had solids once per day, moving onto twice per day at about 7 months). We dropped the DF when he was 6.5 months old, so his milk went down then, but we only did so because he just stopped drinking it all of a sudden. (One night only took 5oz, the next 3oz, and the next night 1oz, so we just stopped and he never noticed!) That was when I upped him to 2 solid meals a day I think.

Thank you both so much, this is v helpful. Especially because he now eats more at his breakfast and lunch and his df has really dropped off (maybe 3 oz) so we're considering just cutting it out as in the mornings, he not desparately hungry. He's still not on 3 meals but am considering introducing his tea over the course of the next week or so.
